Ford Lotus Engine Query???

hi folks, new to here and generally looking a bit of info on a engine i have sitting in my garage.

ok here it goes, its a lotus twincam engine with 40 webers i think not 100% sure. the engine belonged to my father who go it fully rebuilt and fitted it to a mini then the project came to a stan still and engine was removed and mini scrapped, the engine is a proper stmped l block 701m-6015. just generalla looking on a valuation on this as there is a man tortureing me to sell it and im afraid hes offering too little for it as i remember my father telling me its a very rare engine.

do any of yous know much about these?

It would have been produced somewhere between 1967 and 1970 for the Mk1 Escort or Mk 2 Cortina. Very rare and very desirable engine. I would certainly want it off of you if I had something to put it in.

Something rather special, reputedly of Ford Germany origin probably for the Escort T/C. Only made as an ‘L’ block, a meatier casting altogether, with big square main caps, the best basis for a competition engine, and much sought after. Many were used with 81mm bores towards the end of Ford’s engine exchange scheme for the 1500cc Cortina, so you know where to look.

Value wise, I have no idea, but concidering the value of the Lotus Cortina or Escort, I would have thought three figures for a rebuilt version.

I would say this engine was fitted to a Lotus Cortina and is worth around £600 if it has been reconditioned recently and is working you may get upto £1000 for it.

The 1558 cc Lotus twin cam was first developed for the Lotus Elan in the early 1960's (1962?) with a Harry Mundy designed chain driven twin overhead camshaft ally head on a 105E based bottom end and was made right up to 1975. It had a bore of 82.55mm and stroke of 72.75mm (over square). Your 701M-6015 is a Mk2 with a 6 bolt crank and square main bearing caps. If it has had a recent (good quality) rebuild it should be worth somewhere north of £1k, but give Burton Power a ring on 020 8518 9136 who can give you a better idea. The only question might be as to what mods have been made to the flywheel etc in getting it to fit the mini bell housing? I ran two Twink engines in the late '60's/early '70's - one was a Special Equipment Elan engine producing 122 bhp in an Anglia which I raced at Brands/Silverstone/Thruxton etc and the other was a mildly modded twin cam in a Mk 2 Lotus Cortina which I rallied.
