Problems With Brake Pedal

Hey all,

Wondering if you can help in some way.

This morning i found my brake pedal isn't working properly.

I've found when the engine is off, the brake pedal is fairly firm, but when i turn the engine on and put my foot on the brake pedal, it just hits the floor instantly, so it is really REALLY loose. So im not able to drive it as the brake pedal just doesn't work at all.

I rang Kwik Fit as they're just round the corner from me but they cant see it until next week and want me to take it round there, which i cant very well do. So just wondering if theres anything i can do myself to tighten it up a bit or whatever needs doing to it.

Thanks in advance :)

Just been on http://www.ehow.com/how_1846_check-brake-fluid.html and read a paragraph at the bottom.

"If the brake master cylinder is empty, the brake pedal will go to the floor. If this is the case, you will have to bleed the brakes in addition to adding fluid: Time to see your mechanic, who will flush and refill the braking system."

Will check my brake fluid levels now but sounds like it could be this, if so, is it absolutley necessary to bleed the brakes? If so, is this an easy DIY job?
