jaygee82 Posted April 7, 2011 Share Posted April 7, 2011 hi everyone, i tried to capture the horrible noise my car sometimes makes on first starting (for around 1 minute until it gets warm) but this morning there was no love. Its not the DMF because I am starting in nuetral with clutch on floor. Will endevour to capture that sound another day. however i captured this video, this is a "cold start" although its 30 degree celcius here. can someone tell me if theirs sounds like this, i think the volume has been captured well - its freakin loud ! the car has just under 90 000k miles on it (140 000 kms) Thanks in advance ! mondy-man Posted April 7, 2011 Share Posted April 7, 2011 Nasty noise! Hard to tell with my crappy little Speakers but sounds like it could be the big-ends that have gone (very bad news). I'm not going to rule out that it could be the chain, as unlike motorcycles the chain is moving faster (even at idle) than a motorbike's does and it's inside a metal cover when a motorbike's is outside, so it would sound different. I think you need a proper opinion on the noise by a professional in person before you fork out for anything. If it is the big-ends, you'll need a full engine rebuild :(. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! thanks again mondy man, i ment a bike cam chain but i know what you mean. found the only mechanic in brunei that knows what they are looking at today. hopefully find out early tomorrow the cause of all this noise. i didnt think it could be the big end coz it only slaps while it is cold - would the big end be making noise all the time. eek i hope you're not right - ive only had the car for 5 days - i even had a mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection on it (5 minutes of driving it and looking over it) fingers crossed for something on the AUX belt. I wouldn't say its a main or big end bearing problem though? it sounds like a rattly top end. If it were me i would try a good oil flush and some new oil and filter. I had the mechanic reassemble the bad tensioner so i could use the car locally in the mean time as they wanted 550 BND (270 GBP) for the tensioner alone (not fitted). I got the gates kit (with another pully and new belt) for much cheaper delivered. also found was a broken lower engine mount, i have bought a 2nd hand one so perhaps that will clear up some noise and certainly some vibration (heopfully the horrible nosie) ! jaygee82 Posted June 15, 2011 Author Share Posted June 15, 2011 ive had the tensioner replaced and the bottom pulley inspected. still havnt gotten to the bottom of this noise. it has nothing to do with the temperature of the engine :( its only when the car is first started though, anymore ideas ? does this sound like the DMF and clutch to anyone ? the noise is definately coming from around the exhaust manifold. im stumped ! :( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Perhaps it might help if you could listen to another when it is cold to see if it's the same. But I can state that even my MK4 Mondeo 2.0l diesel with 13,500 miles on it, and a more modern engine, makes the diesel rattle until warmed up.
