This is for some of you mathematicians on here. Over a week ago i put in my diesel tank £60 worth of fuel at £1.40 a litre. I have nearly come to the end of using it up and covered 440 miles. Whats my MPG please. I've worked it out as 46.7 MPG. Most of it was fast motorway miles with aircon on. My car is 1.6 tdci. slightly disappointed.

that's 42.86 litres - 9.43 imperial gallons.

440/9.93 = 44.31 mpg

By my maths...

You put 9.93 instead of 9.43 gallons.

Mid 40s MPG doesn't sound bad to me...

My 1.25 petrol Fiesta gets 45MPG, and it is a smaller engine that doesn't even have A/C, so I think your MPG with a 1.6 diesel is alright...

  • Fill the tank up to the point where the fuel pump clicks off.
  • Zero your odometer.
  • Next time you fill up, make sure you fill up to the same point where the fuel pump clicks off.
  • Make a note of the amount of fuel you have just put in.
  • Make a note of the mileage on your odometer.
  • Use the number of litres and mileage to work out your MPG: http://www.mpg-calculator.co.uk/

What are you expecting driving quickly with air con on? If you drive sensibly with no air con you can add at least 10 MPG to your current figures.
