Intermittently on start up (more noticable from a warm start) the engine RPM rises to 1100-1200 revs and then drops to 400-500RPM and hangs up. touching the throttle has no effect until some 3-4 secs later the RPM increases to normal. othertimes the engine rises to 1100-1200 revs and then drops and stalls. doesnt happen all the time though. Any thoughts anyone?

idle control valve or collapsed hose at the rear of the throttle body

Thanks - would an ICV or Collapsed hose cause this to happen intermittently though? It only happens say once every other week or so?

Other things I have read on google searchs for similar sympotons to mine pointed to it possibly being air intake manifold? Do you know if this is anywhere near the exhaust manifold? the reason I ask is I had a new engine fitted in november last year and after a few months or so It went back to ford as the exhaust manifold gasket needed replacing?

if it wre the intake it would be constant he fact its intermittent can be the icv starting to go or sticking taking it off and cleaning its worth a try also a sticky pcv valve

Do you know if this is relatively easy to do?

icv is 2 bolts to take off and a connector plug spray the internals with brake cleaner to clean it pcv valve is at the front under the manifold small 90 degree pipe that looks liek it goes into the block with a rubber surround simply pull it out and cleanit with brake cleaner and replace icv is at the rear above gearbox pass side from the pass side wing looking at the engine from the side youll see it

Took car to ford last week for annual service.

While I was there I got them to look at the issues raised in my initial post (i.e. Shuddering & Start-up intermittent problem).

They informed me that a new PCM update was needed so they carried this out (no extra charge) and told me this may correct the idle shudder issue I was experiencing

Had it back a week or so now and it still not really cured the problem but the shuddering is something I feel I am going to have to live with! not had starting issue happen (yippee). On the phone prior to the PCM update I questioned with the guy at Ford about the Focus being designed to idle too low for low emission reasons which he seemed to agree with but confirmed that the idle cannot be increased as it is ECU controlled).

Anyway in addition to all the above something else has started to happen with the car which hadn’t before it went in last week – not sure what this could be?

Basically what happens is when I find biting point and pull away in 1st gear and into 2nd the rev counter drops low and battery light flashes up!! Engine doesn’t die seems to correct itself. It seems to only happen if I give it a fair bit of gas from 1st gear – I am not an over eager driver but the focus (1.8 petrol Mk2.5) seems to need a fair amount of revs from standing . It concerns me cause it has happened a few more times this week whilst driving in stop start traffic.

I’m getting annoyed with my car now and am sick of going back to Ford – maybe get someone else to look at for a 2nd opinion.

I’m even considering selling it but am concerned that if someone wanted a test drive they may question the shuddering!

Mate unsure what year your car is but I had a 03 plate focus and the revs used to bounce up and down and then drop really low - sometimes it would stall , other times the lights would come on slightly on the dash as if it's going to stall but if I put revs on it would stay running ? This issue was from new on the car and it spent the 1st 6 wks in ford and never found the issue , I only kept the car 6 months and chopped it in but ford never found the fault , hope you have better luck.

sounds like youre new problem is either a battery issue or the alternator ide have it checked

Only does it if I pull away with a fair amount of revs in 1st then quickly into 2nd and then brake to a stop - revs drop battery light flashes on but revs climb back up to normal. Tried to do it again but couldnt get it to happen - maybe its my driving dipping the clutch to hard when braking dunno????

I still got a feeling it could be the idle control valve - its properly not working 100% - times ok, others fine, know this was suggested before - have you changed it or tried cleaning it as suggested??

This when on my old Escort years ago - would drop revs and stall all the time. Got replaced and all good. Then a few mths before i got rid it started playing up again but not as bad - wouldn't stall but at times the rev would drop to the point about to stall when dipping clutch slowing down at junction etc - this was intermitant - could happen for a few days then nowt for a week. I just lived with it at that time.

I did think this it could be ICV related as Artscot79 had mentioned this to me previously. No not cleaned it yet. Maybe take back to Ford to check this! thought they would have checked this themselves but maybe not! Would this show on a Diagnostics do you know if a problem ?

it doesnt create a fault code or show up on diagnostics its one of these replace to eliminate parts. if the idle drops too low the battery light will flash on briefly as the alternator isnt getting enough current through so its definately a big possibility and if it were me its something i would change they do tend to go, cleaning doesnt seem to help much either save the diagnostics fee all that will show up is a low battery warning caused by the low idle and that goes away on its own after so many clean starts

Thanks artscot79. this may explain the battery light brief flash when the revs drop low. I will have a look and see if I can replace myself or get it in the garage to be done

should be easy on the 1.8 from the front looking at the engine to the right of the engine youll see the coil pack look behind the coil pack towards the firewall side of the engine youll see this post-8800-0-56001700-1320325076_thumb.jp held on by 3 10mm bolts simply unplug the connector from the bottom then remove the 3 bolts change over and reconnect the wires and youre done easy to do takes approx 15 mins

in addition to above - they changed the air filter on the service dunno if this has anything to do with the problem?

have posted a couple of vids from earlier tonight. Couldn't get the battery light to flash on this time though!

I also noticed that from cold start tonight if I gently touch the throttle literally touch it with hardly any pressure (just a very light tap on the accelerator) the revs drop really low as well.
