wrong tyres??

Hi all. just bought a fiesta classic 1.8 diesel (1996) and have noticed that the hand book says they should be 165/60 13 but they are 165/80 13. what is the difference and how will this effect the cars handling and diesel usage?

The 60 or 80 are percentage of width that profile is, thus 165/80 13 tyre will be deeper (rim to tread) than 165/60 13. This will make the overall diameter of wheel plus tyre bigger with result that handling may be a little worse, acceleration in gear a little worse, fuel consumption a little better. Main concerns are that your speedo will under-read so risk from gatsos etc. even if you think your inside limit and potentially insurance could create if you haven't informed them as none standard.

I would agree with Dieselrob. Over-sized tyres will change the handling and dynamics of the vehicle which could ultimately lead to an accident (god forbid), at this point your insurance company will probably inform you that you are not insured.

Better to be safe than sorry and get the sizes checked.

Also 4 new top brand 13' tyres cost less than one tyre of my smax

The 165/80/13 tyres are fitted as standard to Escort Vans, so i would think that someone had a set lying around and fitted them on the car.

It would be best to resort back to the correct size tyres for the car.
