Pauls,

1) your Ford model shows "not gone one yet" so more detail is needed on what car / engine / transmission / fuel etc.

2) can you define "puffin on tic over" -

is it making a puff noise like a genie in a lamp?

is it puffin' gas out the exhaust pipe in plumes of black smoke every three seconds?

is the bonnet blowing open and then closing itself because the engine is puffin a high pressure explosive air out through the spar plug heads out forcing your bonnet to explode?

You need to provide more detail than you have, otherwise most members will skip the thread and ignore your plea.

more information definitely needed, if the engine is coughing, I once had a problem where water was getting into the distributor

at that mileage did anyone think to check the fuel filter first? its the most looked over part as its considered to not need changed but they do puffing is a broad term a muffled pop would suggest overfueling however my old 1/8 did the same and it was a charecteristic of the engine seen escorts do it also its suggested that the low idle and the fact fuel doesnt burn consistently can cause a slight almost puff sound if its not loud and the cars running fine no smell of fuel from the exhaust once the cars up to temp ide except its just the low idle

Definately start with the Fuel Filter and the fuel filter housing. Whilst the engine is idling, if you pop the bonnet, and then get to the ground near the rear wheel, can you hear any unusual noises from the rear wheel, slowly crawling forward to the engine bay, and finally under the bonnet? if you can hear any sort of "resistance" in the path from the back (sort of like the fuel is trying to squeeze through under pressure, then you can definately look further into the filter.

When was the last time the Fuel filter was replaced according to your invoices?

I believe the ICV on the 1.8 is at the rear of the engine and quite tricky to get at.

It's quite easy to screw the timing up if the locking kit isn't used correctly but I'm sticking with a vacuum leak or a split hose..

Hi. Ihave 1.8 '99 petrol zetec and share your problem with 'hunting' at low revs and occasional stalling, New Quality HT leads and plugs with correct gaps set seemed to sort the first time. iac valve the second time and lubing the throttle cable and now I think its just part of the focus make up. I'm having a play with a slight misfire now too so will let you know if its connected. Also try not to use supermarket fuel definatly makes a difference in the running.

What happens if you unplug the maf sensor? A duff one will cause running issues...

TRY to the left of where youre hand is a black circular box it fits there by the look of it or behind the engine where ure hand is in the picture it will conect to a larger piece going into the engine next to a rubber hose with a bend in it that runs under the coil pack

Do the revs hunt when car has been left for couple of hours? sounds like it could be cylinder head temperature sensor;not an expensive fix.
