Hi all,

looking to buy an mot failure for the mrs first car. it has no tax as far as i know so i will be declaring it as SORN as soon as possible but do i need to have it insured although its SORN? car is going to be kept on the drive.

Finding quite a lot of conflicting stories but im sure i got a note with my tax renewal that said any car declared as SORN must still be insured... anyone clarify this for me?

Its going to cost me £100 for 6 months SORN insurance but i would rather not if i dont have to

cheers

stef

Info borrowed from http://type-r-owners...r-SORN-vehicles

If it's not declared SORN it has to be insured, which is a waste of money.

So the rule is, declare it SORN if it not being used and isn't insured.

Here is an overview issued by MSE news.

A new law will make it compulsory for all motorists in Great Britain to insure their vehicle unless it has formally been declared off-road.

Everyone must soon get insurance now if they use their car, van or motorbike but this will be extended to all vehicles that are taxed, even if you don't use it.

The new regime will begin in late spring though no firm date has been set.

This means those with vehicles kept in a garage for long spells are most at risk of falling foul.

Are there any exceptions?

You can only escape the compulsory insurance requirement if you declare your vehicle as officially off-road. To do this, you must fill out a Statutory Off Road Notification (Sorn).

Anyone who has not used their vehicle and not had it taxed since the Sorn regulations came into force in January 1998 is also exempt.

This will mostly apply to classic cars but if you own a vehicle that has been taxed since then you will have to buy insurance unless you declare it Sorn.

The law will apply in England, Scotland and Wales but not in Northern Ireland.

I'll try to have a word with my Mate who's a traffic Officer and see if he has the definitive answer.

If it's SORN you don't need to insure it. It can still get stolen off your drive though....

Agreed, but if your buying a cheap 'banger' and your happy with the chance - take it, otherwise the car must be declared SORN and kept physically off the road. I would say if you are going to store it on the drive, invest in one of those "secure lock poles"

If he's going to do that he might as well spend the £100 on insuring it for the time being...

Brilliant guys, thanks for that. The car i was after has went over what i was prepared to pay for it so im back on the hunt again.

If i do go down the route of leaving it on the drive with no insurance i will probably invest in a wheel clamp or one of them steering wheel locks or something?

Sounds a good idea, just some form of deterrant or both to make it even more exciting for any wonna be thieves!!! and a well hidden set of keys is perfect also! oh and flatten the tyres! my grandfather used to just leave the car open, but flatten the tyres, many a time he saw someone try the door, sit inside, and give up as it was too much hassle with a gear or steering lock and flat tyres!

Put a big hairy dog in it, works for me.

No-one comes near my work car unless i invite them, not even my colleagues.

I use the latest police supplied 8 legged, nasty toothed hairy deterrent system.

Ten legged if you include me.:D

your a dog handler?

8 legged.. not sure i get that

a big dog would do the trick though, they would still find a way to steal it and the car im sure though..

8 legs = 2 dogs, specialist patrol (Malinois) and dual search trained (springer) for drugs and firearms.

Keep them at home with my collie who was trained to search too but washed out because of bad hips.

Did have a Malinois pup for socialising and obedience training up until 4 weeks ago but she has now gone on to her full time handler.

Busy household as you can imagine.

lol, like it stoney! thats certainly one alarm system your unlikely to mess with, although I am sure that some batenburgs may also act as a deterrant as well?

Oh yeah.

I transport my dogs to work in my own car too so nobody messes with that one either.

Very handy.

Do you think locking my cat in the car at night would have the same effect? :P

Only if it's a tiger.:P

that would be awesome, could be a few 'complications' though

back on the hunt for cars ive come across a green seat ibiza 2001 1.4 8v petrol for £825. 1 owner from new,106k miles on the clock, mot'd till december and has recently had the timing belt done. it has service history aswell, not sure how much though. going to see it tomorow, think its a trade seller.

was hoping to buy a car that needed some work doing but this one seems quite good for the money, other than being green!

theres no tax on it but luckily there is a set of trade plates on it at the moment so hopefully i can come to some agreement about getting it delivered 12 miles home..

Right---

Definitive answer from my Traffic mate..

SORN cars do not need insurance, but it is advisable to keep it insured so as to preserve no claims and protect in case of theft or vandalism.

From the horses mouth.
