Help Needed Please??

I have a 2002 (52) plate ford mondeo estate 2 litre TDCI, i have owned the car since july and up until now it's been great. Have noticed nothing unusual about the car and drove it fine on sunday, however, on my may to work yesterday morning, about 3 miles into my journey, the car suddenly felt a bit sluggish and the coil light began to flash, i continued to work and called the AA, they came and tested the car and gave me the fault code p2339 which according to the AA means a fault in cylinder 4 above knock threshold. He told me i'd be ok to drive it home later and get it to a garage today. The car drove fine home although it was still in limp mode with the warning light on, and on start up created a cloud of blue smoke.

After a long attempt to start the car and a lot of blue smoke I went straight to a garage this morning where he delphi tested the car, it came up with the codes p2339 and p1631. He was really honest and said that there's so many faults that this could be, we may be looking at a huge bill for a still faulty car. Although i'm really appreciative that he was trying to encourage us not to waste money, i'm still left with a car with an unknown fault that i have no choice but to drive to work tomorrow.

Based on my description does anyone please have any useful knowledge or advice that may help??

Much Thanks in advance!

To me it sounds like you need to replace the Ignition coil.

Depending on how much of the ignition coils that are failing will determine how severe your cars symptoms are. Considering the cloud of smoke, does it smell more like fuel than normal fumes? as the car becomes less efficient because the car needs more fuel to run as there's less power reaching the spark plugs.

The car shouldnt be too bad to drive for now but if it gets any worse i wouldnt recommend driving it.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. The smoke smells very diesely and is definately blue smoke, once the car has warmed up it doesn't really smoke any more and once warm has no problems starting at all.

Seconded, as you could cause too much head damage. take a look at this? http://www.talkford.com/topic/140222-fault-code-p2339-advice/ might be of help...

Many Thanks.i've read the thread and although i agree the symptoms sound the same i asked the garage about recoding the injectors this morning and his theory was that they do not uncode themselves for no reason therefore just recoding them doesn't solve anything as the fault will start again.

it all points towards a faulty injector and replacement may be the last option, delphi injectors do loose there codes and the agent should know this, recoding is often the cheaper option to try before removing the injector and getting it tested on injector equipment for fuel patten ect .was this done or did they just read the codes? also did they do a leak off test on the injectors? personally i would try a different garage,by the way if you find a coil pack let me know where it is as i have never found one on a TDCI

Many Thanks for your response. He didn't test the injectors today he just read the codes and contacted a local diesel specialist to ask their advice on the codes. They were pointing him towards a fuel pump/ line replacement as well as checking the injectors. He didn't do a leak off test either, just read the codes and i left feeling slightly baffled! do you know roughly how much the price of re-code is? Thanks again

a good diesel garage will usually charge around an hours work to recode if they have the equipment (try to avoid main dealers ), but you may be best trying to find a delphi injector agent who will know the system best, try the following link to find your nearest

HELP STILL NEEDED!!!!!!!

A quick update A week after my original post!!!

The car has been in the garage since last wednesday now. The injectors have been recoded - that didn't work, Injector that was coming up with A fault has now been replaced today - unfortunately that too hasn't worked.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Unfortunately i'm 11 weeks at most from giving birth to twins so need to get the problem sorted quick or the car is going to have to go, up until now this car has been great and we really don't want to see it go, but time and money is no longer on my side!!!

As i said any other Possible cheap soloutions would be greatly received!

i do not understand why this has not cured the fault, all i can think off is that they are reprogramming the injectors in the wrong sequence,

NOTE: The injectors on the label are in firing order, NOT physical order. The top left

code is Injector 1 (Cyl.1), the top right code is Injector 2 (Cyl.3), the bottom left is

Injector 3 (Cyl.4) and the bottom right is Injector 4 (Cyl.2). Where Injector is the firing

number, Cylinder is the physical number.

When replacing an Injector the code stamped on the body of the new Injector must

be programmed into the PCM, NOT the code on the label.
