my 2000 mk1 1.8i keeps on building revs ...when i am driving and goes off the scale when i push in clutch pedal ..throttle body housing? idle control valve ? any ideas out there ?

Throttle position sensor?

Had similar symoptoms on my old MK1 and that was the cause.

I had the exact same problem on mine, same engine and year, turned out to be a split in one of the rubber air hoses.

Only noticed after spending moneys on replacing the expensive bits first...
