Hello i think i posted in the wrong forum before i wonder if anyone can help me ive been reading some of the posts on here about the mondeo tddi 2001 starting and running problems . i seem to be having the same problems but the posts ive been reading never really said if or how they got the problem fixed so i will try and keep it short. mondeo 2001 2.0 tddi manual when i got the car 3 months ago it was running fine(ish) a little under powered compared to another 4 ttdi's ive driven every now and then the engine missed a beat felt like it was holding back then 3 weeks ago i was driving and i noticed after a 4 mile journey it was holding back more than usual then it was just like the car was running out of diesel miss firing lots of smoke from the exhaust for about 1/4 of a mile then it just died still turned over but not firing called the AA guy he done a few checks and told me theres no power going too or from the lift pump so he tapped the pump with his hand more like a thump he told me to turn the engine over and it started i drove it 5 mlies it cut out but im not sure if its the same problem but its different symptoms this time it just cut out no warning like misfire or smoke but to my surprise it started instantly but only for 5 seconds but it starts everytime for 5 seconds if i leave the car for well it veries 30 minutes to 5 hours it will start perfectly and travel another 5 miles after which the 5 second running problem reoccurs PLEASE HELP i was going to buy a new lift pump and fuel filter and fit them on but i dont understand the 5 second running or the 5 mile driving when it seems to be cold or built up pressure if it was the lift pump surely it wouldnt start and do 5 miles or the 5 second start ups its been doing and if like the AA guy said no power too or from the pump why is it starting and running fine(ish) for the 5 miles is there only power going to the lift pump when cranking the engine ? or when the engine is running ? or just with the ignition onThanks in advance

Hi mate,

sorry to read your having trouble with you motor,

from reading the post above it seems that the diesel is slowly being fed in to the fuel filter housing, and the filter housing is like a resivour for the engine, so the capacity of the fuel filter housing is enough to allow the car to drive a distance of 5 miles before the demand from the engine is greater than the flow from the fuel tank. since the pump is either not working or intermitent.

so if you change the lift pump you should be fine and your decision to change the fuel filter is correct, because their will be sludge coming from the tank in to the filter housing due to the pump failing etc. but before you change the filter mate, i would put some fuel cleaner in to the tank so as it puts all of the sludge through the system from the tank and in to the filter, then when you change your filter you will see maximum results, instead of changing the filter before putting in an engine cleaner.

and i used to recommend RedEX engine cleaner or STP cleaner before i learned that they contain solvents that can strip the protective layer of oil from the internal engine parts causing their life span to deteriorate at a quicker rate than normal, so instead i now recomment Magic Bullet it does the same results but is gentle on your engine.

http://remapz.co.uk/BuyMagicBullet.aspx

and once you have fitted the lift pump, engine cleaner has been run through and you have changed the fuel filter, i would recommend an oil change just to ensure everything has been flushed through the system,

and i have a 1.6TDCi so i cant compare it to your 2.0TDCi Beast but from what i have read about the power of the 2.0TDCi you should be feeling more power than the TDDi

you may need to clean out the EGR valve and if you wish fit a blanking plate to it, that will help your throttle response and prevent waste gasses from re-entering the engine, but its not the cause of your trouble at the momment.

thanks for the reply lenny i ordered the lift pump and filter today off eBay should be with me by saturday or monday i will keep you posted with my results and mine is the tddi and ive given it about 6 doses of redex with each full tank of diesel as recommended on the bottle but it looks like its time to change too magic bullet and do they pass the mot if the egr is blanked ? i will do it in the order you said fit the lift pump then a dose of magic bullet run that through then fuel filter change i also think i might have a split in one of my boost pipes too as im getting like sluggie grease deposits that are slattering around the front part of the engine ie around near the power steering pump and the radiator fan shroud so im going to check and replace them too thanks again lenny i thought i might of been posting wrongly and wasnt sure if anyone could post a reply many thanks Dean

  • 2 years later...

The pressure sensor on the fuel bar can become clogged on some vehicles and cause this fault. Can be checked by using a diagnostic machine which can read fuel bar pressure. Should be a couple of hundred psi of the top of my head.
