Freedive, that's very interesting what you said. (that's why this forum is so good). Is it really not possible to plug an iPod Touch into the USB port using Apples lead and then a 3.5mm lead from the headphone jack into the cars 3.5mm jack? It seems from what people are saying is that the Ford Y lead is too short and too stiff. (cue the gags)

You need to use the AUX in head phone socket and USB on USB part of Ipod. I use a 8GB storage stick on mine. The USB is only used to control the Ipod. A bit of a mess around but its OK.

No, I initially thought that. I tried the apple usb and a separate 3.5mm from the headphone socket, thinking that logically it was the same. This displayed the tracks on the display but no sound came through. When i disconnected the USB the reverse happened. No display but the ipod played through the line in. The mechanics were scratching their heads too.

So I bought a Y lead off Allen Ford via eBay.

Basically the usb track info and music are taken from the ipod connector (i.e. not the 3.5mm ipod headphone jack) and then this splits into the two wires. It's all a bit of an after thought by Ford. The Y lead is too short and too stiff. Frankly it's useless. K Jay is spot on the usb WILL break.

So...to my cunning plan.

(i) Since this morning I've managed to gently prise the usb and 3.5 cover off

http://picasaweb.google.com/kitching.garet...573514833281618

(ii)I will push this little panel under the gear stick (loads of room)

(iii) and connect a 1m usb extension cable and 1m 3.5mm extension cable (I’ve tried and it works)

http://picasaweb.google.com/kitching.garet...573434593802770

(iv) run these cables to the glove box, or little box on drivers side

http://picasaweb.google.com/kitching.garet...573545550763394

(v) connect the Y Ford lead

(vi) and finally, will source a replacement blank panel off one of the basic Fiesta from my dealer. (less than a £5)

Even the wife said Cool!

(Oh and the process is reversible in case if you ever need to take it back to Ford, i.e. not to knacker the warranty)

Glove box and drivers side mini box a bit tricky, so slight change of plan.

Here we go, blanking plate on order overnight from dealer so a day to finish properly but........

USB Plate Removed

http://picasaweb.google.com/kitching.garet...604786376765026

USB bits unclipped

http://picasaweb.google.com/kitching.garet...604837901714866

Extension Cables extended with 1m usb extension and 1m 3.5mm audio and pushed back into centre console

Empty plate refitted (waiting for blanking plate)

http://picasaweb.google.com/kitching.garet...604864363835570

Extension wires taken along side of centre console and re-routed to rear of centre console

http://picasaweb.google.com/kitching.garet...604890155365858

Leaving no wires messing up the handbrake and the ipod facing the right way around.

Install time 15 mins

Cost £1.50 USB lead,

£1.50 3.5mm lead and

£21.50 for Ford Y lead.

£4.50 for new blanking plate.

A productive day even though I'm snowed in.

Would I require a USB male to female extension cable?

Yes a 1m one : male one end, female the other. Colour doesn't matter (about £1.50 on ebay). Search under 'USB extension cable 1m'

Equally, the 3.5mm will be male one end and female the other. (again about £1.50 on ebay) Search under '3.5mm extension 1m'

I have a new shape fiesta without USB port but I do have bluetooth, I would now like to add a USB port if possible but my ford dealer says it isn't possible to do it.

Just wondering if anyone here knows whether the dealer is correct or whether as there isnt much in it for them they are just fobbing me off?

You should be able to get the cable, USB / 3.5mm plate and configure the software. I'd suspect it'll be a lot more that the £50 quoted at time of sale. Perhaps £150 assuming the parts and 1.5 hours of rip off labour charges.

Have a Titanium coming on the 6th March with Tech Pack which includes the USB.

What does the iPod offer over a 16GB USB Pen drive other than larger memory as I can get a pen drive for not much more than the actual iPod Y Connector as currently don't have an iPod to go in the Fiesta.

I presume I can still have the albums, artists etc on the pen drive.

You can, with the ipod it brings up all of your playlists and gives the option to shuffle tracks

Cheers for that. I'll stick to the pen drive for the time being then.

Does anyone know if the same applies to a Sony Walkman MP3 player?

I've tried plugging it in to the USB port but no joy.

Thanks

Does anything appear on the car stereo screen when you plug it in?

Hi everyone; first post on the forum.

Back to Knighton's original question: ".. when using a usb stick is there any limitation in size of stick and file types while using this"?

I have a 16Gb Sandisk Cruzer USB stick and would like advice on the format of files (and folder structure) I need to upload. Can anyone help?

Many thanks

using a 16gb stick in my fiesta and works a charm. doesnt take long for the usb stick to load and plays faultless music. i put all my songs on in mp3 format and use tag and rename so it shows all the information up. all files are in their individual folder for that album. put them into alphabetical order by right clicking on stick and selecting order by name. this makes it really easy to scroll through the list of albums. Mind you it would have been better if ford had let you scroll through albums using the steering wheel controls rather than the big knob on the dash...pity.

Pointless really trying to use an ipod for the hassle it causes, may aswell stick with a usb stick. Have 35 albums on mine and i just pull it out, delete the ones i dont want and drag and drop new ones on.

This looks like a better cable than Fords but it's a BMW cable. I suppose it would do the same as the Ford one? Anyone near a BMW dealer to get a price? :) It looks to be about the same length as the Ford one but it is flexible. Scroll down towards the bottom of the link.

  • 1 year later...

Hey guys.. I've had a ford fiesta for 8 months now and have been battling for a usb pen drive to work on my Fiesta LX (new shape)... When i plug in the pen drive the power to it works as the light flashes on it although when pressing the AUX Button multiple times as suggested in the manual, none of the files/folders are coming up.

The pen drive itself has only one FAT32 partition (SANDISK Cruzer Micro 8GB). I have tried multiple flash drives in all different sizes/brands. The dealership since the last time i brought it in has asked me to upload songs to the pen drive using Windows media player sync. This still is not working. The format of the song files are MP3.

Ive also tried the standard process of adding files to the flash drive by just copying and pasting.

I've also tried creating just one folder on the pen drive with only 2 songs in it. Still nothing!

The guys at the dealership have asked to me bring it in two times so far and i have. The last time they said that they needed a whole day to look at it, which they did and only updated the software to it.

Does anyone have any other valuble suggestions, would be great!!
