Ford Vs Kia - Who Copied Who?

Hi Guys,

Well I have been thinking about the new 2013 Cee'd, and thought I would show you a few pics of the Cee'd and the new Focus, and see what you guys think?

...Come to think of it, perhaps there is an element of new Astra in the Cee'd as well?

Ceed:

Focus:

IMHO, they both look striking, and bare a fair amount of resemblance, and I wonder who copied who...?

Might get round to interior later should anyone care, but I am quite impressed by the new look of the Cee'd, and think it wouldnt look out of place against the Focus? (#Treason)

Now yer pushin' yer luck. :P

Most car companies use the same design companies nowadays so it's inevitable that cars will start looking similar.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

I'd say the piccy of the side of the ceed defiantly looks like the new astra! Both nice cars though, but if this choice was between the new Ka and Picanto, I'd choose the Picanto just because it looks that wee bitty better and it's cute!! :D haha

On looks I would go for the Cee'd

It does look like a Focus/Astra... a lot of cars in that segment are following the same recipe at the moment. I have always snubbed the likes of Kia/Hyundai and even Toyota for the dullish-ness of their cars, but I have to say, the new Sportage and Optima are very handsome cars! Cee-apostrophe-D looks like it's following the same way.

It would be a hard choice on Looks , like you say Focus , Cee'd and Astra share some line's , If i could choose it would be the Focus over the Astra and the Cee'd over the Astra, but Focus on design looks , just via the pictures.

the Cee'd is coming on very strong though and the warranties are also a very good reason to pick the Cee'd.

On gadgets it has to be the Focus though :)

I must admit, the Kia looks more like a real car than i ever thought a KIA could! It certainly has more than a slight look of focus about it... But when you really look there is a lot of key design traits of many car manufacturers about it... A kind of multi rip off that somehow works! Headlights: Peugeot 307 ish, rear profile upper is astra, lower like an alfa...and so on... Regarding the side profile, if it had a mid swage line, it's be a focus!

I'd have (and could afford) a brand new Kia... I'd have (but can't afford) a brand new focus... I could afford a 3 year old focus... I'd rather spend my money on a second hand focus if i'm to be honest... The ford will still feel the same when it's 5 years old, will the kia feel as well put together when it reaches it's 5th birthday?

Liking all the answers!

Stoney... Sorry ;) had to be done when I saw them side by side!

Ashleigh, your comment of cute makes me not want to even think about getting the new one ;) what man would want to buy a "cute car"....

Pete, agreed. the Cee'd does look good, and there are little bits I would prefer to be tweaked, but I think if you put the Cee'd Shell on the Focus handling, (perhaps keep the Cee'd reliablility ;) it could be the perfect car!)

James, like you I snubbed them until I needed to get shot of the Focus, to be fair, since the old days of the "estate rio" they have come a long way, but equally, I think they are just getting into their stride, and as you say the new Sportage, and the Optima really are beginning to push over the Kuga's and Mondy's!

Pree, I agree gadgets are better placed in the Focus than the Cee'd, but I like your ranking system, I havent had any expierence first hand with the new Focus, but judging by the comments on here (aside Ford's deliberate loss of concern for wiping out a bug in the first place, and instead carrying it through) I think that your ranking is fair! I think the Astra has a lot going for it, but then as has been said, Kia / Hyundai are picking up the pace!

Ste, couldnt agree more, they have stolen a few of their looks but they have put themselves together very well, and really are catching up with the modern car, and in some ways lead it (I mean, comeon... 7 years warranty from new, and transferrable to the second owner! the only other I know is Hyundai, but thats five years, Vauxhall warranty is non transferrable). They are doing a good job I think!

I wish I could afford a brand new car of anything, I would happily buy a brand new Optima, or perhaps Hyundai i30 or i40. The koreans started the race slow, but the hare and the tortois is coming to life, I do agree, will my Cee'd still be the same in five years? well, two years after its birthday, and it still feels solid, but then what will happen in the next three years!

To be fair, I wasnt expecting anyone to really take to the new kia, but I think its could that it caused a bit of soul searching amongst you all!

Most car companies use the same design companies nowadays so it's inevitable that cars will start looking similar.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

There's a bit of that from the Korean manufacturers but commonality in car design is more due to a combination of aerodynamics added to occupant and pedestrian protection (eg NCAP & legislation).

Just look at the most advanced end of both occupant protection and aerodymics in the car world - Formula 1 - and you will see how similar cars end up when taken to the ultimate point. It is therefore inevitable that cars more and more start to resemble each other.

Add in a little bit of companies copying each other's good ideas plus a bit a fashion and that's why there are so many similarities between cars.

A very valid point.

Unless you're in China where they just blatantly copy cars almost down to the last bolt.

I like the front of the cee'd but that's it.I agree the Sportage and Optima look very nice.I don't like the Astra it looks fat where the focus has sharper lines to it.

The trend of all cars looking alike is nothing new sadly, One only has to look at the Astra Mk1, The Escort Mk3, Mazda 323 and others of that era and the same thing was happening. The big black plastic grille , boxy styling, rhomboid headlights etc, I seriously pee'd off a ford rep at the Earls Court motor show when I asked him if the Escort was the new Mazda and why was it on the Ford stand ! they were virtually identical even down to the instrument panel ! You could go back earlier even and look at the Austin Cambridge/Morris Oxford designed by Pinifarina and then look at the Peugeot 404, you couldn't tell them apart. Its a trend that will always happen as new fashions and designs all compete for the same market. badge engineering is something we all are aware of throughout car design. Probably the worst one at the moment has to be the Toyota IQ and the Aston Martin Cygnet ! Regarding Kia/Hyundai a few years ago now i was short of funds and needed a cheap car, I bought a Hyundai Pony, It had 60,000 on the clock and apart from a few rust patches on the drip rails which were hidden when the doors closed it was virtually immaculate, It cost me £500 and was one of the most reliable cars i've ever owned. Sure it wasnt up to the standards of handling as, say, an Escort but it was pretty good nonetheless. A lot of people slated them but having owned one I can tell you it wasnt as bad as they made out. The only downside i had with it was that it only had a 4 speed box. Re modern Kias, we have a dealer near us and I have to say the car I,m most drawn to is the Soul. I love its chunky Tonka Toy looks and its solid stance,It sort of says, you dont want to mess with me! ( I love the Skoda Yeti for the same reason). The dealer has a lot of special edition versions coming in and at the moment he's got a deep gloss black one with black alloys etc, it really looks mean and moody! I,m so tempted but need more dosh ! The New Focus is a fantastic car, So is the new Fiesta. The Ka has lost its uniqueness from the mk 1 and is now just a Fiat 500 clone which is a shame. Now if Ford offered the same 7 year warranty as Kia I wonder what would happen. Like many of you it seems i,m definately torn between 2 camps. Wow ! Just looking through a classic car mag and theres a guy selling an immaculate Mk 2 Granada estate! .....decisions decisions............ :)

I would happily buy a brand new Optima,

I think the Optima is quite a head turner too. I probably wouldn't say no to one.

Well you're lucky i was talking about the Picanto then, so you're safe ^_^ Cee'd is still a good looking car. I think it is safe to say that Kia etc are fairly upping there game in the market :)

Agreed, its took them a while to catch up, but hey, its turning heads, and if its even turning the heads of fellow FOC'ers then its not doing too bad at all...

So the next question/s... Optima vs Mondeo, Sportage vs Kuga - Which out of those two would you have and why? Would you take the look of one and the brand of the other and splodge them together

Personally, I prefer the Optima to the Mondeo, warranty, and build quality are superb, and the cost isnt as bad as the mondy, Sportage I think looks better than the Kuga, but I couldnt afford one, ever... lol

Family saloon:

I'd go for the new Optima over the current Mondeo, but once the 2013 Mondeo arrives I'd have to choose that as the interior is really nice and the outside looks aston martin inspired.

SUV:

Sportage vs Kuga - well not overly fused on either to be honest. Might go Kia on this one too, although again once the 2013 kuga arrives I'd choose that as it has the new generation ford interior which I love. Not overly impressed on the exterior though.

Can I not import an American Ford Edge Sport instead :P
