Stoney871
It is a legal requirement for an authorised aircon engineer to draw off any remaining refrigerant safely using the correct equiptment and dispose of it at an authorised facility. If you get caught doing it yourself it's a pretty hefty fine. Excerpt from - CIBSE National Conference 1999 Refrigerant Recovery and Leak Detection http://advancedengineering.co.uk/resources/Cibse.pdf Section (33) ic of the Environmental Protection Act which came into force on 1st April 1992, makes it an offence for any person to “treat, keep or dispose of controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health”. The penalties are severe, namely A. On summary conviction (i.e. in a magistrates court) a term of imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or a fine not exceeding £20,000 or both! B. On conviction on indictment (i.e. by a jury) a term of imprisonment not exceeding 5 years or a fine (unlimited) or both! Heavy stuff i think.
