Young Drivers!,,

Is it just me I've found that some young drivers feel the need to drive as close as possible to the back of your car or sit and rev the engine at lights to try and intimidate you in to a race?? I've been driving a numer of years now and never once felt the need to do any of this even more so with having the kids in the car 90% of the time. Are they trying to prove something or end up like some other foolish drivers out there? It just really annoys me xx

You want to try living over here - all the 16 year olds have brand new cars and they are usually something pretty decent. ST's, Type R's, Clio 172's all the top of the range sporty models. Makes me sick, poor things are ragged to death.

But don't be fooled not all young drivers are like that, Im 22 and i get this even from older generation. Il be sat at the traffic lights at a 3 lane round about in my Zetec then i get them sat next to me revving and edging forward and backwards whilst the lights are still on red. Then soon as amber comes they shoot off...only to find another set lights on the roundabout 10 metres away. Its annoying. They think because i am youngish with a sportyish car..that I'm a tit!

You just have realise they 'think' they look cool and are the better drivers... I love my Zetec, and i like to go fast and not do the speed limit when the boys in blue ant about but I'm no idiot. But i definitely agree that its annoying but its not all young drivers!

After all the time and expense of getting a licence nowadays and the cost of insurance for young/new drivers, it's amazing how many still lose their licence in the first two years.

I used to hoon around on bikes in my teens and a couple of nasty crashes taught me some much needed road sense.

It's all about bring cocky an showing off.

We can all be a bit of a dumbass at times but some drivers just don't grow up.

Im 23, and I find more problems with OLDER drivers. Take my recent treck for example... I was driving home, car fully laden, pregnant wife on board and my 18 month old son on board. Sign in the window clearly states to even the most imbosilic town eedjet, that there is a child on board. So they drive up my bumper on the outside lane of a motorway... So I showed him and his merc a lesson. He drove up my backside, I slowed down to 50 (matched speed with the lorries) then put the car into third gear, and disappeared, then he did it again, so I slowed down to the nearest car, and proved the point again. Eventually, I got to the point there was a completely open four lanes of motorway and just pulled in and let the eedjet passed, opening my window to show my depreciation for his driving habits with a clenched, osciliating fist... he did the same and picked a fight with someone down the road who played the same game as I did. I drove up behind him put all lights on full wack and sat behind him for a few minutes, until me and the car in front got fed up with him and let him tear off like an R.Sole. Me and the other car, just exchanged looks that said a thousand words....

It really REALLY peeves me off when people dont just have so little respect for your own vehicle as well as their own, that they will risk rolling the two of you into a certain devestation of an accident, but they blatantly IGNORE the fact that they are also placing children into the risk.

People like that I always comment as they pass, that I hope they wrap themselves round a tree or a lamppost. Preferably a beast of a tree, as my taxes wont then have to replace the light post etc...

I LOVE showing these idiots a thing or two with my Reasonably Priced Car. I love being in control, when I am in front, he has to do what I want, and if I dont want to move, and I want to sit there until I pass a police car to do him, then I will! and if I drive by myself, I will certainly peeve them off until I get bored, or run out of fuel, and I would happily waste a tank of fuel showing up some imbocile and his very expensive car, if nothing else, but to show him that a big expensive car CANNOT bully me, no matter how hard he tries!

I'm not sayin all young drivers my little bro (19) drives a decent car and he drives like a Granda doesn't speed etc etc and older drivers yeah are just as bad I totally agree with you guys there but in my experience a lot of the time it is young drivers with there pals in the car showing off,and it give people that do drive sensibly a bad name I admit I do if I've had a bad day thrash my poor car but only if I've not got the kids and no one is on the road at the time,

my drive home from collecting my daughter from school this afternoon was to say the least fun it's all 20mph had a twit tryin to be funny my kids plus my mates in the car so I decided to stop oppist a parked car and get out and give hime what for lets just say he won't be pulling that trick again as a stressed out screaming mother is pretty scary xx

I am also 22 and while I do occasionally love a twisting B road, I care too much about my car to tear about like an idiot - it's my hard earned cash that pays for it, insures it and fuels it. I stick to speed limits and respect other road users in the same way I would like to be respected. I have friends who drive the same way.

Having said this, it is the minority that give young drivers a bad name (and hence higher insurance) - I have a friend with a sporty Corsa and he drives like an absolute ape... inches off people's bumpers, 100+ mph on regular roads, undertaking etc. One day he is bound to screw up, but he won't learn until that happens.

I do find too that drivers of Audis/BMWs/Mercs and such, of any age, take on similar driving characteristics to the percieved 'young' driver: Racing from the lights, tailgating, ambitious overtaking etc.

Gemma I get exactly where you're coming from. Being a young driver myself and driving for nearly two years, some of the drivers in Aberdeen really stress me out and pee me off (young and old!)

I remember sitting waiting in the traffic along the beach one night on my way home from college, i had an old chavvy escort pull along side me full of 'lads' and the driver revving away trying to get my attention. Trying to ignore them I eventually just looked across and kind of frowned and shook my head at them. And every time the traffic moved and stopped i was still bleeding next to them! Have to say when I eventually got through the green lights I could not have been happier to get away from them!

Also had cars sitting next to me at traffic lights and roundabouts revving away. Just because I have a sporty looking car does not mean I want to race! I simply want to get to where i'm going in one piece without reckless drivers annoying me!

It always used to be reps in BMW that drove on motorways like total spanners now it's all Audi and Mercs.

Around town it's some little tool with his silly mates 5 up in a slammed corsa squealing around corners and looking like an advert for Halfords with every bit of crap they can stick or screw on.

I was in an unmarked car a while ago heading for a late night raid and drug search and one in a 1.2 corsa was playing silly beggars behind me, trying to prompt a response and a race thinking I was some boring Focus estate driver.

I was in plain rig and the car only had the Springer in it so was an unmodified boot but had concealed lights and equipment.

The driver kept chopping me off at roundabouts but as I was urgently needed at the job I was trying to resist jobbing him.

In the end I got fed up and dumped the lights on him.

You have never seen a face go so white and brakes go on so fast.

I did him for reckless driving, speeding, illegal number plates, excessive tints, driving the car in an unsafe condition and obstructing an officer.

He was within his first two years so will lose his licence and his car was towed.

I think even my dog was laughing at him.

Total chopper!

That made me laugh so much. I was on edge of my seat when you started about the drugs raid! like a big kid.

It is a massive massive shame that most the idiots my age that drive like idiot's give us a bad reputation and ruin it for insurance and so on.

could do with having clive over here for a couple of weeks,

their's a guy in his early 20's drives a R34 Skyline over here and drifts out of the local petrol station on to a main road with traffic coming behind him and his car on opposite lock,

now i must say it is pretty impressive!! and to see the blue smoke from the rear tyres and hear the wistle and pop from the turbos but i really cant wait for the day the cops are in the stream of traffic coming behind him.

because if he suddenlty got grip in a drift he could potentially kill a person walking on the footpath along the road.

the guy really doesnt care who see's him.

I'm a young driver and i like to drive on my favorite roads for fun but not breaking the speed limit and if theres a car going very slowly I make sure not to tailgate them (usually I keep a 4 second gap) I think it's far 'cooler' to go as far as you can without an accident but sadly most people my age dont think like that

Always nice when you get a group of young lads in a modded 106 at traffic lights screaming the hell out of their 1.1 litre engine, only to stall as you slowly set off and wave them goodbye :)

lol that picture is just worth every pixel!

I love how you chopped the eedjet though Clive, would have been a laugh to see, but it comes down to priority... The priority of other officers attending a drugs raid, or a young goon, who is risking life and limb of his own and others.... I dont suppose you would have been missed too much?

Young drivers are no doubt a pain in the backside, no doubt about it, and they need to learn to be safe too quick, but get out of the mentality of "its cool to show off to my mates" as to be honest, your car being towed, and your carcuss being towed to intensive care, really isnt that cool...

I do show up young kids and old eedjets alike, If safe to do so and to slow them down, I will do it! I will get in there way and I will refuse to be bullied, and I will certainly do it if I see a vulnerable person ahead who is much more at risk of these loons than I am. I know its technically illegal to "self police" the roads, and maybe some would say that is what I am doing, but I would rather be the vigilante who saves one major accident, than be the first aider on scene cleaning up after it...

Stupidity transcends all age barriers.

You can have bad attitudes whether you're 18 or 80.

You get young hoons showing off to their mates/girls and middle aged twits with a chip on their shoulder or a superiority complex.

I love unmarked cars with the pop up signs, pull in front of some twit and press the button.

Sign pops up, brake pedal goes down, trousers go brown.

I really, really, really love my job. biggrin.png

God, i love my job sometimes.

I would have loved to be a dog handler, I know a few of the dog guys over here and they are lovely blokes.

With having no national speed limit here, I drive quite fast in a de-restricted zone, but as soon as I approach the stretch of road that has a limit on it. I always stick to it. I have idiots over taking me because I have slowed from doing 80 to 30 so in effect when overtaking me they must be doing double the speed limit.

Then there are the dingbats that do 20/30mph all the way through the de-restricted roads, and as we go into a 30 they speed up to 40mph. Winds me up!!!!

That is awesome! I would have payed a lot of money to see that, classic :L

As my dad always says, there are two types of fast driver - those who know when its safe and legal, and those who dont, not that i want[wanted] to, but i would never have got away with driving like a fool.

I know a couple of boys that went out and bought themselves a Corsa and a Clio. The Clio is "modified" and is in a state. What worries me is that they're both 17 and haven't even started lessons yet they're talking about "racing" each other. I just despair at them because they're the reason insurance premiums are so expensive! Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a dig at modified cars. I like ones that are tastefully done, especially a nice classic ford ;). Well hopefully they get their licence taken away from them and don't cause to many accidents.
