Fiesta Brake Problem Spongy And Low Pedal

Hi , just to let any one know if you have a late model fiesta 2009 onwards if you are expriecing a spongy or low brake pedal and there is no obvious reason or leaks it can be fixed.

on my particular car 2010 zetec fiesta manual the fix was to take it to the ford dealer and have them use the diagnostic compter in the brake tool box section and bleed the brakes using this attached bleed the both front brakes at the same time, then the rear brakes at the same time.

this has fixed my car the pedal is hard from the top now and the test on a brake roller machine confirms it has nearly doubled its efficency not many dealers are aware that this is the procedure requred.

I have only been putting up with this for 2 years from new and the dealer told me they were all like that low and spongy what aload of B.S i told them to use the diagnostic tool as it is the only way to get the ABS unit to work and pump all the air out of the system

Another example of where It continues to amaze me that Ford specialist dealers are unable to sort problems out like this with all the Ford backup and diagnostic equipment and (hopefully) experience they have. Perhaps the latter is the root cause, they just don't have enough experienced technicians who understand what they are looking at when viewing OBD data. It seems to me that the technology that vast companies like Ford have engineered into their products are just too far ahead of the local service people. Sorry for the rant.

Hi,

Was your car's brake pedal always spongy and low or just sometimes?

My wife's got a 2011 Fiesta 1.25.

On a journey, sometimes the brakes are fine, other times the pedal sinks with very little braking effect.

Brake fluid level is fine, recently serviced, no leaks - independant garage suspects an issue with the brake master cylinder.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance

John

Just air in the system, give the brakes a little bleed will sort it.

I had this problem ! Exactly the same dealers said it was like that on them all etc so I just thought nothing of it.

I've just bought a ST and the brakes are obviously miles better but in my old 2010 ZS I new there weren't right but never did anything because the dealers said that to me !

If only I had seen this all that time ago haha !

Cheers for telling us anyway hopefully it will help others now !

Best case it will need pressure bleeding (but then you gotta ask why it needs bleeding) mine had exact same issues, and turned out to be the Hydrolic control unit or ABS pump, was a costly job, but the garage I bought the car from payed ford to fix it, as it would have failed an MOT.

Brake servo vacuum hose is most likely.

It was the Brake Master Cylinder - now replaced and all working as it should do :-)

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions

hi john

i now have the same problem as what you had with the brakes had it in the dealership about 4 times now they stripped and cleaned the brakes two times saying that the build up of dust is causing the problem then i was in the garage today and they could not fault the car. the brakes are very spongy so don't know why they said there was no fault

i tried to quote about what other members of the forums have said and they are not interested on what happens on the forums

so now i am very concerned about my safety when driving. i have got the car checked in at kwik fit for them to have a look

Spongy brakes is air in the system, just get it up on stands and bleed them

Use i.d.s bleed master (uses a.b.s to assist in bleeding brakes) and then rear parking brake adjustment using i.d.s. this will sort out the spongy pedal, thats if theres no leaks etc.

Using a pressure bleeder can draw out the brake fluid too fast an cause you to loose the pedal all together

Hi all

Have had this long travel on my Mk7 Fiesta, tried bleeding the brakes, twice, a bit better, changed the brake hoses for Goodridge

braided, another little bit better, but still not as good as previous Mk6 I had.

Have now fitted new drilled and grooved MTEC brake discs (£73) and EBC standard pads (about £20), much better, not so much travel and a more progressive brake.

Could it have been the pads that were the problem??

The brakes on these Fiestas are just crap in general, you've replaced them with harder items so yes I would expect a change along these lines.

Be careful with the Groved and drilled stuff though, they crack very easily, avoid going through puddles as it'll cool them too quick. EBC pads for £20 though? Link?

Do they come with prawn crackers too? At that price they must be Chinese knock offs...

Not true, drilled discs do not crack easily, I have heard that if used for racing this can happen. Fitted a set of drilled discs to a Merc CLS, these have now been on for more than 5 years, no cracking, these dicsc were also purchased from MTEC. If you buy EBC red stuff than you can double the price of the pads. Check the prices for yourself

It's very true and very well known and happened to me with aftermarket brembos and a mate on an rs6.

Never heard of the cracking. I give myn a hell of a hammering and they have never failed me. Only problem i found was brake fade (mk6 fiesta) but that was out braking a 1 series.

Personally i think the discs wouldnt be on sale if they crack easily as there would be one hell of a lawsuit on somebodys hands even cheap ones have to be tested and quality controlled to a certian standard

type into google Drilled Brakes.. then leave it and see what the 3rd result is, Cracked is the one,

Thousands of pages, even on EBC and AP's own websites mention this.

Brakes are a consumable, you can't hold anyone liable for brakes cracking anymore than you can for wear or a tyre going bang or an exhaust weld splitting after 6 months.

I have a 1.0 13plate ford fiesta eco. Mine has been in the garage twice now for braking issues, sometimes I'm using my gears as a mode of braking. The pedal seems to sink right to the floor, with no progression on the brakes, then all of a sudden I'm pinned to the steering wheel!

It is very disconcerting, being a blue light driver, I am very worried about this.
