Basic Ball Joint Question

Hi, bought a 1999 mk4 fiesta at end of last year.(32,000 mls.) The cars in great nick but m.o.t. showed play in the front ball joints but still passed. Now I'm hearing clunking noises from rear even on slightly uneven roads.

I'm a bit of a novice mechanically so looking for advice on this problem. Also how much roughly will this cost to put right.

CHEERS.

Hello and welcome to the forums :)

If and when the front ball joints need replacing you will probable be better off replacing the complete lower arm (which includes bushes and ball joint)

The knocking from the rear could be the anti roll bar drop links or bushes or just bushes in the rear suspension setup - you will need to investigate to find out

Hello and thanks for your quick response. I'm sure i'm better off having a mechanic replace the complete front lower arms.

Have u any idea how much this should roughly cost ?

At a guess i would say £50-60 for the lower arms and bolts (after market) and probably 1-1.5 hours labour. so i would expect to pay £100-£140?

If you are into basic mechanics and looking to get your teeth into something, its quite a good relatively straight forward driveway job
