Alright guys,

So....i'm curious, not long had my zetec S tdci!

I'm delighted with it, it's lovely! Frozen white - well looked after.

I'm not overly impressed with the range from full to empty though.

I'm getting a range of about 350 - 370 miles per tank - is this right?

I drive sensibly - but still don't get that good a mileage!?

I just sold an 03plt Clio 172 and i got 340miles per tank in that.

it was £5 more expensive to fill up....but surely i should get more from the new car??

Any thoughts?!

Cheers

You are getting about 35-37 MPG, assuming you mean to empty. (Tank is 45L).

Couple of questions:

  1. What length and type of journeys are you doing?
  2. How long have you been doing the above journeys?
  3. Are you going by the trip meter or your own calculations?
  4. How many miles are on the clock?

I've had the car around a month now.

My journey to work is around 10miles (15mins).

Cruising the whole way pretty much.

Also - regular 20mile journeys in the evening - every couple of nights or so.

Going my the trip computer.

There are 26k on the clock.

Can this be right?!

I've not got a heavy foot!

If i'm being honest - i don't change gear when the green light tells me too - but i change within a reasonable range.

Have you reset the trip since you got the car?

I'm assuming although you say cruising, it is still only 30 mph?

It's 60mph for most of it!

About a mile of it is 30mph.

By resetting the trip - do u mean holding it down until it goes " - - - - - " If so then yes! Everytime i've filled up.

Or is there a different reset?

You're resetting it right.

Something's not right though, I was getting 500-550 out of mine.

Well that's what i was thinking!

I'm getting ever so slightly more than my 10year old 2ltr petrol clio!

Any suggestions?!

Where to start....?!

One possibility is that it is trying to do a DPF regen, or is in need of one.

Is yours the 1.4 or 1.6? If 1.6 is it the 90PS or 95PS version?

It's a 10plt Zetec S, 1.6 tdci.

I think it's the 95 hp - but tbh - not entirely sure?

How do you do a DPF regen?

And I'm getting 450-480 miles in my 1.4TDCi

How do you do a DPF regen?

If you stick your reg into Ford Etis (may need to register), it will tell you which one you have.

To help it do a regen, you basically just take the car on a dual carriageway for 20-30 mins and keep it in 4th gear.

So....it's the 95hp model i've got.

So....20-30 minutes on the motorway in 4th?

What speed roughly?

How will i know if it's worked?

Apart from the mpg being much better of course....lol

Still drive at 60-70 mph, the aim is to keep the revs at 3000-3500rpm so the exhaust can get nice and hot.

I'm not sure if there is anyway of knowing when it is finished. On my mums car you know when it is in need of a regen as the car keeps having its fan on, even with short journeys as the car keeps trying to overheat itself and burn off the DPF.

Ahh....well....funny you should say that!

Twice over the wknd the fan was on after a short journey!

This would affect the mpg as drastically as it has??

If it has been a while since it had a regen it will.

The problem is two-fold:

  1. The car keeps trying to initiate a regen, it does this by deliberately running a rich fuel mixture to try and increase the exhaust temperature.
  2. The DPF will be blocking the exhaust flow, causing the engine to work harder as some of its energy has to go into pushing the exhaust fumes out.

Ahh right i see.....

Long run in the car tonight then!

I'll let you know if i get any results!

Thanks for your help/advice!

Let me know how you get on as I only get 420-450 miles on a tank running from full to about 30 miles left according to the computer that's on similar journeys to you 50 mile round trips to work mostly 60mph

Ok - i'll let you know!

My round trip to work isn't 50 miles though!

It's around 10 miles - takes me 15-20 minutes to get to work.

I'd like to at least get over 400 miles to my tank.

Hopefully this will sort my mpg issue.

That's a short journey in a diesel wouldn't it be cheaper to run a petrol as the running theory is if you do less than 16000 miles a year it's cheaper to run a petrol

I do drive elsewhere other than work! lol

Although - i don't do more than 16k.

Cheaper road tax - cheaper insurance - better running costs etc

It depends on your journey type. My dad does about 12K a year and gets 60+ MPG and we worked out is more than beneficial for him.

I do less than 5K, but have a diesel. I bought it because I like the way a diesel drives, even then I am getting over 40MPG on a 4 mile round trip and I push her some.

Plus it gives me a good excuse to go out tearing up the country roads at weekends as I need to keep the DPF clear :D

Is it even worth having a car if you do less than 5K?! :P

is it only the 95bhp version that has the DPF?

I have the 90bhp and only get around 50mpg - that's driving really efficiently mostly motorways. Was wondering if this technique of clearing the DPF would apply to me.

Thanks

Correct, you will not have a DPF.
