Lenny you're a star,

Couldn't wait to try it, just took them both off and on again - 5 minute job!

Even the Haynes manual says you'll probably need a puller.

Good Grief, how many beers is that I owe you ?

Hey Lenny

New plan re ERG hahahha decided not to use the blanking plate !!!

Getting the boooger written out at ECU :D as recommended by the terra clean garage here in Cardiff...

so now have blanking plates for both 1.6 tdci and 1.8 if anyone wants one send me a message and ill send it to you FOC

Egr delete is best accompanied by a plate! The egr if not used can seize partially open quick affects your driving. Blanking it off means it's written out and disabled physically also and will not be a regrettable decision

I'd still blank it to be sure mate,

Only takes a bump in to road to knock the deleted egr in to open position which is worse than ever.

Best to blank it for sure.

I'm not a fan of delete as it can cause a hick up in the idle tick over but each to there own

Hello guys it's me again,

Changed the bodge blank for the new shiney stainless one, so now I'm confident in it and it fit well.

The engine light and code P0238 is now solved, it seems that if you... ehem...forget to connect the plug and socket at the rear of the air filter box then that's what happens, it's now connected and has cleared the problem (the plug and wire had dropped right down behind the engine.)

Been for a run round and found that the engine has a little stutter now and then, it's random and intermittent like a tiny ignition cut but there's no fault lights and apart from that it's good.

I've put some Wynnes injector cleaner in the tank but it hasn't cured it although it seems a bit smoother running.

Any ideas about the stutters anyone?

Any injector cleaner will take time to work - it's not an instant fix

Thanks Mark,

all this is new to me as I hadn't worked on a diesel before and to be honest I didn't think I would as it's been so utterly reliable up til now. so the cleaner will take a while to work, I'm convinced it's doing something though as I've just been for run and it hardly stuttered at all.

Although it does seem a bit hopeful to bung something in the fuel and expect it to fix a problem, I admit I didn't expect much.

What did you find when you used it?

Martyn.

It could take several tankfuls of fuel with cleaner added to make a noticeable difference as it depends how gunked up the injectors are.

I'd change the air filter too, if not done recently, as your engine is now receiving more air due to blanking & I'd also take the car for a high rev blast :)

Thanks Mark,

Lenny already put me onto the Green Cotton Filters and I'd like to do the oil flush/change as well to see what changes that makes.

Hello again,

Late thanks to Clive, I've already shelled out for oil, filters and the X'ado as per Lenny's recommending so that will come first, I've been forum trawling to look for the stuttering/safe mode problems. One of the main suspects was ecu and with a re-map in mind thought that might be two birds with one stone but the tuners wouldn't start until the problem was sorted.

They did a full diagnostics though and it came up with 'Injector circuit problem cylinder 4'.

They recommended me to a local injector specialist, so I'm booked in for Monday.

The little orange OBD meter I have been using to re-set the safe mode never gave a code for the injector so I advise anyone with an engine fault to get a proper diagnostics check rather than rely on an OBD meter.

Hello. With response to this thread I removed the diesel filter & housing.

My car is registered may 2011 and so I have taken a picture of my EGR that's vacuum & electronic controlled.

How do I post my picture please?

Installed my EGR blanking plate yesterday, and its worth mentioning that not all 1.6 tdci fiestas fits the guide, not mine 2010 at least. I had to remove the diesel-filter with brackets surounding it, also its not torx, but 10mm bolts in the covering plate that goes inline with the front window.

Should also mentioning if the EGR plate is installed with holes down against the screws, or the other way around. You cant really tell what way its going in, due to its tight in the engine bay.

Did not notice any decrease in turbo lag either, as mentioning in the first post.

hi,

Thanks for additional information regarding the fiesta model, i don't envy the job you had in fitting it mate but thankfully it only needs doing once in the life of the vehicle.

If the EGR blanking plate is completely covering the centre pipe and all back together tight you should notice a slight increase in performance as well as transition between gears.

If you're not currently noticing any difference then give it some time,

Your dpf chamber may be somewhat restricted which would restrict flow causing some Back pressure,

This would be a positive reason to blank the egr as well,

Now the egr is blanked the exhaust flow is 20-30% more positive, this will help clear the dpf chamber due to increased flow,

You should feel the difference over a couple of weeks,

The induction chamber demands up to 30% more air now the egr is blanked all induction comes through the induction filter; what condition is the induction filter in?

Again id like to note;

EGR blankings main goal is to prolong the life of the turbo and engine,

The slight increase in performance is more of a cherry on the icing.

In case anyone was interested and following my tale of woe, I thought I'd finish the story because as I've found out, there's nothing worse than following a problem like your own, only to find they didn't bother to write up the outcome.

To re-cap, the mappers wouldn't touch the car until the obvious stutter problem had been cured, it could have been the cars EMU needing updating but that was unlikely as the mappers did find a faulty No.4 cyl. injector on their diagnostics.

So I bit the bullet and went to get a stack test from a diesel specialist, don't ask me I've no idea either.

Anyway it was bad news 3 out of the 4 injectors were a fail, the car wasn't really worth the cost of them replacing injectors (over a grand for all four) so with no guarantee that it would solve the problem it was a non starter.

I had a good search on line and came up with these people;

http://www.commonraildiesels.com

They do affordable rebuilt and tested injectors £440 part ex. I gave it a go although it's a bit of a gamble in case there's anything else wrong but I fancied a go at replacing them myself, how hard could it be? Very as it turned out! The hard part is cleaning out the injector holes without having junk fall into the cylinders. Getting the old injectors out is not easy and I'm thinking that No4 cylinder injector was damaged earlier when the garage changed the seals, it was a s0d to remove and needed levering out.

All done now though and I'm pleased with the outcome, it now runs very smooth. I won't be having it mapped after all because it's good enough as it is and there was nothing else wrong with it after all.

Many thanks to Lenny and his spot on advice.

Hey up chaps.

Bit of an observation on this topic.

I've had mine done for some time and the engine management light was always lit. After reading some other threads on these forums (and other websites) I have changed over to BP and Shell diesel now. I was using Sainsbury's before. The car smoked it's way around and emitted black contrails rather than clouds under power. With cleaner fuel now in the tank, the car smokes less, which means a cleaner exhaust system. It also means that the EML has gone out!! It hasn't been on for a while now. I've not used FORscan on the car yet, but I strongly suspect that cleaner diesel has helped matters. The car is running a charm so it leads me to think that fuel does have an affect.

If you find yourself in a similar situation to the one I was in, try changing your fuel and giving it a few weeks and a bit of a kick about when you can. :)

I'll do some diagnostic checks and see what I can find

There's also differences between the branded fuels too. I've gone from BP to Shell and I was surprised to feel my car running sweeter.

Shell all the way for me. Just had a new fuel filter, and whilst my car tends to run on Shell 24/7, its much sweeter. The car is quieter, I can put put along at idle in third and fourth gear and its almost as smooth as cruising at 1000 revs.

between that and the EGR, I tend to get over 50MPG minimum from my car! best part of 700 miles a tank, and if I really try to push it, I can get even more.
