Engine Rattle 1.8Tdci 2007

Hi all,

I want to try and make this as concise as possible for anyone to help me.

I have a 2007 tdci focus 52k on the clock and FSH. It has developed a rattle and I'm not 100% sure if it has done it since using engine flush or not but its just something I traced back and thought maybe related, the noise is also loudest when the engine is hot. No obvious power loss, smoke, etc.

The sound is almost a bearing sort of sound like a tensioner, however I have replaced the aux belt and tensioner (and ran it without the belt on ) and it still does the noise.

I have also just had the cambelt and tensioner replaced, and it's still doing it.

When ford listened to it, they said its most likely either of this things, I have tried listening with a stethoscope and I can only say it sounds loudest at the left hand side of the engine.

Please can anyone suggest what the noise could be ? The only sort of moving this on that side I can think of left is the chain that runs the fuel pump? Can anyone tell me a little more about the setup and whether this could be the noise, does it have guides or a tensioner that could be noisey also ?

I will try and post a video up soon also.

Many many thanks to anyone that can take the time to help me out, as I've already spent a few hundred quid on it to no avail. I'm also going to do another oil and filter change tonight and check for any swarf.

Dumped the oil last night, no change in sound at all even when first starting up after the change, still there just as loud. No obvious swarf in oil, and was still nice and thin.

Is the noise not coming from the alternator ? Could be bearing on its way out ?

Not meaning to be funny, but please please read my thread properly, I had people in the last thread picking an auxilary piece of equipment at random...

"however I have replaced the aux belt and tensioner (and ran it without the belt on ) and it still does the noise."

If its NOT the cambelt , OR anything connected to the auxilary drive belt, what is left ?

Just to add to this, the friggin thing cut out whilst idling, and took a good minute to start back up again, whilst it was trying it was shaking very hard. Then It started again fine and a few times after that too fine. What could have been dislodged that I need to check that may cause this ?

is your coolant ok? no leaks and the cap is sealing the pressure tight? dunno just throwing out some guesses here.

Also is the AC system running fine with no leaks?

Cooling system is all okay, clear no oil in coolant or coolant in oil not using a drop. Air conditioning is completely fine also and I ruled it out by disconnecting the auxiliary belt.

Took it to a ford specialist today, and he updated the software to the latest version and cleared the codes, hasn't cut out again yet, and he seems to think the rattle is normal it's the injectors on the off throttle basically stopping the engine from stopping if that makes sense. I guess ill just keep my fingers crossed and hope that it keeps running and not do it again.

Noticed the release bearing on clutch is noisey too now, when pressed in slighty down to halfway then it stops, I'm just gonna nurse it along I don't fancy coming up with 700 quid right now !

You mention the noise in your clutch release bearing stops when yopu push the clutch halfway down. The release bearing normally makes a noise when you push the pedal down. Could be your dmf is rattling, pushing the clutch halfway might be stabilising it.

Thanks flying clutchman.

Just cut out again, took it back and it flagged up fuel pressure, now leakback testing the injectors !:(
