How To Install A Conical Air Filter To A Zetec S?

As title.

Usually there is an air box that you can just swap out to put one in, but as I found out on another thread the actual filter is in the engine bit.

Wondering if there is any tutorials or anyone can help me do this!

For reference the filter is a basic universal conical one.

Thank you!

2007 model zetec s petrol

Short and simple answer dont bother. You will get less power, less mpg and devalue your car. Because 1 look at a cane filter and people with think its been chavved.

My advise as a professional mechanic AND motorsports engine tuner, get a high capacity panel filter to replace the standard filter. Youll get real gains and not just noise and chav appeal

Thanks for the reply, appreciate the input!

How much we talking for one of them? Also any recommended sites to buy them from (should the price be right!)?

Thanks

Demon Tweeks, Burton Motorsports, etc. You want to be looking at K & N, pipercross etc.

This should suit your needs (I cant remember if yours is a 1.6 or not tho)

Yes mine is the 1.6.

Will this improve the engine sound? I have simple needs..

Also can you tell me if mine is a Mk 5 or 6? I thought it was a 6 but on that site it says Mk6 is 2008 onwards :s

My reg is : MM07 ***

Thank You!

It will make it sound a bit more roarty aye, couple this with a decent back box and youll get decent bhp gains, a nice sound AND your car wont look like its part of the burberry wearing knob head brigade

You know what my next question is going to be now you have mentioned a decent back box...

Any links for me or recommendations?

Thanks for your help :)

scorpion are probably the best pound for pound back box. A nice 2 1/2" rolled tail pipe will look and sound the nuts on a fizzy. Anything bigger and itll just look daft and have the rozzers hunting you down. Subtlety is the key word for young lads in fast cars. But the scorp do sound nice when nailing it but are plenty quiet should you need to blend in (if you know what I mean)

with a filter and back box your prolly looking at a 8-12bhp increase just by bolting them on due to the engine being more efficient. Youll also find its better on fuel too!

Thanks and I know what you mean! Had a 1.2 R reg fiesta, loved it but just a bit weak! Now I've got a 1.6 I can actaully hear my engine and want to make the most of it!

£200 bucks...oosh... demon tweeks a good website/company?

If it's going to make a difference then I would certainly save up for it, and from what you have said you know what you are on about! The back box has had 0 reviews though?

Appreciate the help mate- can you verify if mine is a mk 5 or 6 for me? I'm unsure!

Yeah Tweeks are one of the best out there, and youll defo see some gains. No idea as to why theres no reviews on their site but ive been fitting scorpion exhausts for the last 20 years and never had any trouble with them.

Not entirely sure when the change over was but the parts I linked to were for a 2007 like yours anyway so you should be ok.

superb, thank you!

I have heard of K and N, not sure where or why, and their filter is only a fiver more- is it worth getting it?

Also are there any other modifications that you think are worth the money?

both similar gains in power and sound, K&N use a cotton gauze and pipercross use foam. Both are performance products and will achieve similar gains. My personal choice would be Pipercross over the K&N, for no other reason than they are easier to clean come service time.

In short either one will suit your needs

Because the Pipercross uses dry foam, it has an advantage over the K&N because the oil (in the oiled cotton K&N filter) can contaminate the MAF sensor

Lol thats a bit extreme! Leave the poor lad alone LOL. Im sure when he sees the subtlety of my van or your Mondeo and how fast they go he'll get the idea

Haha that post made me laugh!

Like I said I hate nothing more than them cars you see with 5 lads squashed in and huge exhausts on them that sound like they are going super quick but you end up overtaking them on your push bike...

Think I will just save and get these bits! Only issue I can see is my current exhaust is hidden, it faces downwards under the car- thats how it came, but would the scorpion one do the same or would I have to modify the rear bumper?

IIRC the exhaust is made in such a way as you dont have to cut the bumper.

One last thing!

I have found the same parts on euro car parts, total price comes to £228.26 compared with £236.44 on demon tweeks.

Is there any reason I should go with demon tweeks? IE better looked after products or better service? Are euro parts bad or anything??

Just checking as for the sake of £8 I would rather go with the better company :)

PS the parts on europarts are, which are the same I believe?

If you only replace the back-box on the exhaust, it may not make that big a difference because the rest of the system is the same, for example, the system may only be 2" (50mm) also, the most restrictive part of the exhaust is often the catalytic converter, to really get a significant gain, you would probably have to replace the entire exhaust with a performance one (not cheap), and a sports/ perfformance catalytic converter as well, even then, realistically you are probably looking at a real-life 10% performance gain

The Scorpion is a bit expensive for what it is in my opinion, its juust a back - box, after all, and i think you should think carefully about where you want to go with the car, and whether you want to go for a "money no object" type mod/s and get a top-of-the-line complete performance system/ cat or go for a less expensive back- box than spending £180+ on just the back-box

Hear are some cheaper alternatives :-

this -

Piper (well known, quality brand/ still a lot cheaper than the Scorpion) -

or a single pipe -

K&N have been around for a long time but fashion/ time/ technology moves on and the type of oiled cotton filter in a K&N filter can contaminate the maf sensor, and does not flow as well/ filter as well as modern foam filters -

Pipercross panel filter (cheaper than the K&N, and IMO, better) -

Just to give you some alternatives

edit - proper stainless- steel (304 aircraft grade/ iso9001) Miltek cat- back exhaust, (single 90mm jet)specifically designed for the mk6 fiesta (04-08) its has a 60mm diameter, its £381 but its a complete cat- back system -

Thanks for the input!

Like I said I just want a bit more of a roar from my car, thats all. To get a whole new system is a bit much for me and I understand what you mean about the thinnest part being restrictive.

This says it is for 1.2 cars, mine is a 1.6 so I guess that would be an issue?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIPERCROSS-PANEL-AIR-FILTER-FORD-FIESTA-1-3-02-12-PP1487-/160922407190?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AFiesta&hash=item2577b91116#ht_1929wt_1170

Same with the exhaust it says for cars up till 2002, would that be an issue?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PIPER-STAINLESS-STEEL-EXHAUST-BACK-REAR-BOX-FORD-FIESTA-Mk4-Mk5-1-4-1996-2002-/230348116451?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35a1d151e3#ht_3833wt_960

I would be happy with a back box for £100 branded or anything upto about £70 for an unbranded, I don't want one thats look silly on the car just one to give a bit more noise!

Thank you again!

Well its good value, but its only 50mm (2") (probably the same diameter as stock- not 60mm like the miltek - the 60mm flows more gas/ more power especially at the top end- you are unlikely to get a big power gain staying at the same diameter(though some parts of the exhaust can be especially restrictive)) its mild steel (rusts) not stainless steel, i don't know if it is very different from stock - perhaps one of the silencers has been removed?

Most of the back-boxes are interchangable, or could be made to fit fairly easily (mk4/5/6 etc) i made a back box delete from scrap exhaust parts "rescued" from a skip, the boost controller fitted on my diesel Mondeo was designed for high- output petrol drift racing cars, i have Nissan GTR parts on it as well

Most of the Cheap back- boxes are "universal" (the same one for Fords Vaxhalls, VWs etc etc) anyway but one for your (mk/ year) car would probably be easier to fit on - i just did a quick search to show there are cheaper alternatives - you would need to check compatibility

Only a top-of-the-range system (like the miltek) is actually made for the power characteristricts of the car/ engine, with the right balance of gas flow & back- pressure

You know your stuff!

Think I will just get the pipercross air filter thing and a back box.

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/replacement-elements/car/ford/fiesta-mk5/2007/1-6/pipercross-performance-replacement-element

With P and P is £37

Then as far as a back box goes are there any that you have found?

From what I have found these two look okay...dont they?
