Hi all, I'm looking to increase the bhp of my mk1 and was wondering if you can recommend a kit or company preferably in the NW to do this

Is had a quote from one company called Bailey Performance of £3500 for turbo kit, manifold, exhaust work and remap etc, fitted, giving around 240bhp

So I'm looking for similar... I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty as long as there are no custom tools involved, also I won't be doing this straight away, some time next year depending on funds hopefully

Can anyone help?

Thats a lot of money and it would be a lot of hassle, and these conversions are not always reliable -

transplant may be a better way to go - you might be better getting an RSmk1 engine/ trans and sticking it in - you would get the ATB and strengthend gearbox clutch etc

Another option (if you really want something special/ different) is a RSmk2, 5-pot - there is 350+Hp potential from that, or 225Hp bog stock/ straight out or the crate or 260Hp with just a remap, its worth doing (rather than just getting an ST225) as the mk2 Focus is a bit of a bloater and the mk1 chassis is around 200kg lighter

Typically for these types of questions you don't specify what engine/ capacity type/ gearbox etc just that you have a 2000 mk1 Focus - presumably its not a diesel 1,4 because thats already got a turbo :lol:

People start projects like these and spend ££££££££££s on them, they might have been cheaper just buying an ST or RS etc in the 1st place

would also add, unless your Shell is in mint condition, would not bother spending that amount of money on it, as Foca says you could buy one. end of the day if you can buy one, buy it, if you cant buy it build it, that way you end up with something special, not something that cost the price of the real thing but isnt.

Thats the kit youll still need uprated clutch gearbox especially fuel pump the list gets bigger and bigger as you go £3500 will soon become £7-10k

Thanks guys, I hadn't considered getting an MK2 RS unit at all, will definitely be looking into that! Is it much hassle with the dvla to change the engine details?

It was a typo - i meant the ST225 - 225 out of the box and 260 with a remap/ no phisical mods it is possible to take the ST to 300+, but it can become unreliable as it does not have some of the parts the RS has, like the oil pump (apparently) i always thought the RS and ST 5-pot engines were very similar but there are important differences, apparently,

The RS also has trick front suspension to reduce torque-steer and an ATB (Automatic Torque Biasing LSD) to improve traction where the ST has a conventional type diff and uses traction control to electronically brake the front wheels (similat to ABS )

The most powerful of the Ford Fucuses with the Volvo 4-pots (the RS500) has 345Hp and 340ft - lbs stock, i have heard some tuners claim they have got 550/600Hp from this unit, but i have not verified this

its a lot of power/ torque to put down through the front wheels even with the ATB diff, a Saab engineer once said 200hp is the limit for fwd, the revoknuckle, traction control and ATB help to make higher powe/ torque more managable, but rwd or 4wd would have an advantage at these (higher) power outputs,

There is someone who has put a Volvo 5-pot turbo (i think it was from an ST225) in a Mondeo mk1 4x4, and apparently, it really shifts,

Rick - in the "old days" you might have to put a "Q" plate on an - engine transplanted car, the MOT has changed recently and there are all sorts of new rules about "heavily modified"cars, (i colud find out- i know of someone that preps race/ rally/ street cars that is "up" on the new rules) you would probably have to have specialist insurance

Insurance would be very difficult to find with that sort of a modification! its hard enough just getting an insurer to understand it has a different engine from a like car, let alone one on steroids!

You could probably get kit car insurance with a high exess and limited mileage, there was a chap on here who was quoted >less< for his modified car than for the same car, but stock - insurance is a strange thing

If you are under 25 you could, forget it!,

I know someone who is insured for any car, including 1000Hp Evos/ Skylines etc, on motor trader insurance, but not 200Hp Cosworths? weird

I was talking to one of my brothers about the amount of power and torque sent to front wheels earlier today and we kind of came to the same conclusion as you guys that the max manageable is around the 200hp mark which kind of led onto making my mk1 rear wheel drive......thoughts? Lol

I didn't realise the rs had such a complicated arrangement at the front, so might look for an st engine rather than the full fat rs!

As for insurance I would have to look into it but would definitely welcome any input! I'm nearly 31 which makes things easy I know

To be honest there are a lot of front wheel drive cars with well over 200 bhp now. I don't think it's a major issue but you just need to make sure you have a decent tyre/suspension set up and a limited slip diff if need be. It also massively depends on the quality of road surfaces etc but I don't think you would have an issue running mid 200's with a good set up.

Yeah just saw the above car which is reported to have over 400 so just have to make sure I have the right set up as you said, maybe trying to nick as much as possible from the mk2s suspension, if it will fit of course
