thoughts please' 1.6 focus 05 climate change petrol ' issue if the engine does not start the first time (usually does) I get the red light flashing (the one in between fuel/temp) upon restarting car drives ok and the light eventually stops flashing and all seems well . do I fault ?

Could be a communication fault between the immobiliser chip in the key and the receiver in a ring around the ignition barrel.

Also it could be that you are trying to start the car too soon after putting the key in the ignition, It's best to let the light go out before turning the key to allow time for the system to recognise the transponder code.

if the issue persists, try using the spare key, does the issue stay or go away?

thanks guys' going to try spare key (when I find it) will post back ' stoney 871 thank you ' I have tried removing ignition key for a moment or two when issue arises then restarting' red light still remains on flashing rapidly decreasing to slow flashes

Rapid red flashing means either bad comms between the fob and the ring atound the ignition or most likely an unprogrammed or incorrect chip in the key.

How many keys do you have?
