Auto-Opening Boot?

Featured Replies

Hi.

On my keyfob, if I press the boot button twice, it opens the back slightly. I was wondering if you were to replace the shocks with something more powerful to push it up, it'd open itself.

It's just a real cool feature, which most Mercedes and Volvo cars have, and I thought it'd be cool if it was to be done on a Fiesta. I wouldn't know where to start on what type of shocks to get, or if there was another way of doing it, e.g. springs?

A lot of people do this on other cars, I was wondering if anyone has done it on a Fiesta.

Its ok until you see someone open the boot remotely in a multi-story car park with a low ceiling and they damage the boot lid on it. I must say it does look cool but you have got to be careful where you use it.

Yeah, I've already read around seen these factors. Good thing about the key is that you have to press the button twice to be able to release it, however I've already taken this into consideration. It's still quite cool I think

i think it would be pretty cool like!

I remember seeing on the alfa mito forum a while ago someone had done that to there's and it did look good when they uploaded a video of it.

Ooo I like, I like!

I have a guy by me who specialises in struts, it sounds like I am going to need to pay him a visit next week

I did this on my estate. all it required were some strong spring and probably some new struts. The spring opened the door part way then the new struts took over and opened it fully.

this it a how to for mondeo estates but the theory is the same for other models

http://fordwiki.co.uk/index.php?title=Automatic_boot_opening_Mondeo_Mk3

heres an example of it done on a mondeo hatch

its great for scaring the hell out of people who stand to close to the back of the car

The website is in dutch. I can't seem to work out the price.

How much did it cost you?

I'm gonna try look into this and perform it myself, thank you

I also looking into doing this mod... It's basically, if I'm not mistaken, putting strong springs onto your existing gas struts, and heat-shrinking some wrap over it, so once your boot pops the springs shoot it up enough for the gas struts to kick in...

One quick question... How did you know what size springs you needed? I.e length and tension etc..?

I got them from a member of another forum, they cost me about a tenner if i recall.

The heat shrink is optional, mine doesnt have any on but you can if you want. "once your boot pops the springs shoot it up enough for the gas struts to kick in" in theory thats right. Its usually better to buy new struts as quite often the old ones arent as strong to be able to open the door on their own.

With regards size. you'll have to measure the gap between the strut and the clasp when the door is in the closed position (can be fiddly for hatchbacks as theres not as much room to sit in the boot ) . once you have that its a matter of finding a spring that will fit, fully compressed, in that space. In the case of a mondeo estate the spring is about 2-3 inches when uncompressed, I cant remember how long it was when the door is closed.

Im not sure about tension but you need it strong enough to pop the door open, but weak enough so you can shut the damn thing afterwards.

The springs on the Fiesta start pop up themselves when the boot is quarterly open. I don't think it'll be easy because like you said, it needs to be strong enough to push it to the correct strength for its self, but not too strong that it'll be hard to close again.

A lot of hassle indeed

Agh ok, I have loads of it around so I may wrap it anyway, just to make it look OEM looking ish lol... Yah I've not long had the gas struts fitted... At the moment I have to lift my boot about 1/3 way up before it lifts itself, so it's quite good..

Haha good point.. Nothing too powerful.. Looks like ill be in the boot with a flashlight again haha... I'll try get good dimensions in case anyone else has same focus as me, it may help them.. Then hopefully look for some springs lol. Thanks for your help.

Its not worth doing if it isnt going to be a hassle

Well it's a nice little feature that can easily be 'disabled' so to speak, however it's one of them things where someone has to spend a lot of time and effort researching and practicing before anyone else does it

I'll be trying this on my mk7 facelift tomorrow,

I'm going to try using springs for tuning R/C cars and see how that goes.

Good luck Jack.

Bare in mind these springs are heavy duty stuff. I have just measured mine and the metal is 3mmx4mm and uncompressed is 29mm.

this is a post about the automatic tailgate, I hope it isnt against forum rules to post other forums on here.

heres a couple of pics, yes its a bit rusty, the heat shrink may stop this or may cause more rust due to holding moisture inside it, im not sure.

Yeah, more research needed me thinks, aswell as new struts with a removable ball end.

How did it go?

Im sure i have seen this being talked about before, someone getting some from ebay and had a link on here (i think) but they kept breaking or something.

I could be wrong but i did look at them as a nice idea.

I had one set on my car, removed it after couple months of use. It worked on hot summer days and opened the tailgate fully, on colder days it still helped little. Both gas springs started to show some leaking. Fiesta is not optimal for springs, there is too little space for them, so spring travel is too short, and geometry of the gas spring mounting points is so that spring is putting extra strain on mounting points. Hard to explain in writing, easy if you see it on car.

And sorry for my english, not native.
