I Hate Car Insurance

Sometimes though, you really have to wonder what calculation is used - Age x car age % NCB x 1000?

I mean, how is it you can buy a new, safer car, with no difference on price comparisons, have everything else about you and the cars location, workplace etc the same, and then have absolutely nothing to benefit from it, but a sting in the tail, whilst someone more at risk with a more likely to kill them car, can drive around for peanuts?

I'm now paying £660 for a group 7 insurance car, with 1 fault accident, 1 non fault (even though it has to be recorded as fault, until I provide written insurance provided evidence to the contrary), yet, I know people who drive class 10 or 12 cars, less than my age, with no NCB, car tarted to the aerial in mod's and they pay £500? it honestly makes no sense.

"More likely to kill them car, can drive around for peanuts?" That aimed at me!? Haha

I totally agree with you by the way. My 18yo little brother, clapped out 52 reg 307 1.4hdi £1400, a brand spanking 1.2 Corsa £700......

haha, not directly aimed at any members of the forum, but moreso those whom I know around the area! I have a few friends who have a not too dissimilar scenario, newer cars, bigger engines, more torque and bhp, and paying less than half they were before...

Its frustrating though, as you say, your bro - good for him for getting his insurance that cheap at 18! - but still, proves the point, buy a newer killing machine, pay less, but for me, buy newer killing machine, pay more! :@ grrrr

I had a Saxo vtr 1.6 and changed to a Puma 1.4 cause I always liked them and thought it'd be cheaper but it cost a lot more to insure. Doesn't make sense to me...

I remember getting 2 quotes on bikes. Daytona 675 was £320, Daytona 675R was £180. R version is worth 3k more, has fancy brakes and suspension, and is set for track use.

I asked why it was cheaper, turns out that quotes are partly based on how likely it is to be crashed.

Rarer model, statistically less crashes, lower premium!

Common model, statistically more crashes, higher premiums!

Just been quoted £1120 for my car with my first years NCB. Was £1400 last year, I was honestly really hoping it would drop below 1k.

Newer/more expensive cars are less because they think you'll look after them more which is true. If some idiot swerved into my lane and nearly hit my car I'd try and avoid them. If I had a £500 shopping trolley I'd let them hit me and claim off the insurance lol.

I was getting quotes £500 more for a focus with full leather, 'Sport' seats apparently... Because seats make your car faster, I better get some RS seats if this is the case!

I'm 24, 5-6years driving experience, 3years ncb. No motoring offences or other convctions.

Currently paying 795quid. Was 695quid but my job needed me to add business insurance which added 100quid to me policy.

Insurance due next month so I've been getting quotes. Gave hastings a go who my yunger sister is paying 500quid with when she's only got 2years of driving behind her.. They quoted me 5grand!!!

Done a moneysupermarket quote and the cheapest i got was 1500quid upwards. What the hell is going on!

Waiting to see what my renewal quote will be from current insurer. I thought quotes was supposed to go down with age and experience not up.

I hate my missus,

Whom sent away all of her original copys of the last 7yrs NCB via standard mail, despite my advise to send them via tracked mail,

Of course they got lost in the post.

She can only get another copy to prove 2yrs NCB

Resulting in her policy going up from 410euro to 1,110 euro

All because of standard mail im a further 700 euro out of pocket,

Other than that i cant complain,

Im in a 1.6 168bhp coupe, 3yrs NCB full licence 6 months and my insurance is 410 euro :D my yearly road tax is 610euro

Over all though I'm currently spending 2,330euro per year on tax and insurance for both vehicles

With mishaps like this jeeb there's no big bucks earned, ive worked 7-3 yesterday and im working tomorrow night 23:00-07:00 overtime but its all going on the insurance policy that has gone up because of an envelope that's gone missing over the sake of 3euro for registered postage.

Yeah ,its going to be a few busy days! I sympathise with you!

On the plus side, it seems you are well rewarded for your base efforts, so it should be that you are well reimbursed for overtime?

Ah the overtime is good triple time for paddy's night but id prefer buy a varex muffler than increase on insurance.

£400 to insure yourself for a full years motoring? Bargain!

I got my first policy in September 2013, after driving on other policies for about 3 years. The insurance company would give me 1 years driving experience, even then, it was £890 (fully comp) on a 1999 Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec. !Removed! expensive! There's always room to haggle, though. Add other drivers to the policy to bring down your risk (I have my mum on my policy, even though she never drives my car). Never auto-renew, and never accept the price they give you off-hand. Always try to get a better deal for yourself. Most importantly though - don't lie! It's as good as shooting yourself in the foot, as when you need to claim, they look and say "You never told us about this... sorry, we can cover you".

Another little trick - change your employment status. If you're a joiner, rather than give your job as "joiner", say "carpenter" instead - the risk categories are historical, and even little changes like that can make a big difference, as they look at the figures and will say "Well we had 100 joiners crash last year, and only 5 carpenters, that means that carpenters have a lower risk", which we know isn't true, because it's the same thing, but it's just a little trick you can use to reduce your risk and insurance costs.

When I changed my insurance over from the Fiesta to the Focus, it was going to be £15 more expensive, but I changed my employment status from unemployed to shop assistant, and then there was no change in prices between Fiesta and Focus insurance, as changing my employment status cancelled out the £15 extra.

I really hope in September that I can get a decent deal. I'm crippled right now with my insurance repayments.

Try £3000 for my own policy on a 1995 1.1 Fiesta LX, doing 5000 miles a year.

LV won't even insure me with spotlights.

When I was 17, I bought a SORNed Peugeot 205 that I was going to put on the road. Got it for £80, because my dad's mate ran a Peugeot garage, and they had an old one just lying in the shed, taking up space. It was a good little car, except I never actually got it to the stage of being on the road, because I was genuinely getting quotes of £15k for it.

And then one thinks "Why are they quoting me £15k for an £80 car?". Well, for a start, the car was ancient, so didn't have the safety features that a newer car would have. In the event of an accident, that means more money paid out by the insurance company. Also, they see an old car worth £100 and think "you're going to race that car and wreck it", because it's pretty much worthless, and people do do that (especially 17 year olds). If I had told them that the car was worth £3000, I'm sure it would have been a different story entirely. Expensive cars are easier to insure!

I agree, that's how the insurers will see it. But 1. I can't race mine, it has 54bhp :p (means I can't get into any trouble though) and 2. I bought the car because I like old Fords, not because it's a cheap car that's only done 32,500 miles :)

I like Peugeot 205's as well :)

Oh no, I wasn't meaning that you had an old Ford because it was cheap. Hey, Try and get a Mk2 Ford Escort and try to tell me old cars are cheap! But yeah, I know what you mean. But obviously people are racing them/stealing+joyriding them, because they can be had cheap or stolen easy. It all counts towards the perceived risk of the car. Value does make a difference to your quote prices.

Anything can be raced :P Even my 12bhp mower! :whistling:

Even my Mum's Ford Galaxy!

Corsa - notoriously difficult for young men to insure. About 10 years ago, Vauxhall sold the Corsa with free insurance, so a lot of young men and women bought them, and a lot of them wrote them off too. Result - Corsa has a high risk factor.

Last year with Admiral I paid £611 for a 2005 1.2 Corsa SXI with 1 years NCB.

Got my renewal last month for £850, so I rang them up to ask why it had gone up, to which they replied "probably because a lot of claims have been made on this type of vehicle in your area"

Needless to say I looked for a better deal. Adrian Flux offered me a better level of cover for £500, now I'm just dreading when my new car arrives and I swap it over, how much it'll go up :(
