Squeekie Posted February 26, 2014 Share Posted February 26, 2014 Hello guys I'm getting close to replacing my old Focus mk1 (2002) with a newer one. I'm considering both second hand and brand new, but I'm having trouble deciding between which engine to go for. Diesel or petrol? I've been reading up on the subject and I can't seem to make up my mind. What I want is a car that's fun to drive and with good acceleration. I took a look at the dyno results from both engines from a tuning company, and as far as I can tell, the diesel looks much better on paper than the petrol. With about 30% more torque, and therefore 30% more hp at the same rpm , the diesel seems to be a better choice. I gather the extra weight of the engine (about 200lbs) and the fact you have to change gear more often, is why the 0-60mph time is slower than the petrol. I live in Norway, so the diesel fuel prices are about 10-15% lower than petrol. Take that fact and add the higher mpg of the diesel, it seems like a no brainer. Even so, I can't shake the feeling that the petrol version would be much more fun to drive. They both cost about the same to buy. Squeekie Posted February 26, 2014 Author Share Posted February 26, 2014 I drive around 10k miles per year, mostly to work and back (20 miles round trip) so I guess petrol would be ok for those numbers. As for the remap, I'm sure they can check if its been mapped or not, but I'm ok with that. Not sure if I want to remap or not yet. Preee Posted February 26, 2014 Share Posted February 26, 2014 The Ecoboost is a great engine , and the newer ones 2012 owards will probably be the 180ps as agianst the 150ps , they are lively and have the power there whe you need it , but it's average it's never going to be in the ST power range even with a remap. Not a great return on miles per gallon/litre though. Diesel at 10,000 although as you say better on torque is probably not the best option for low miles. IMO. The diesel 1.6 (115ps) was smooth and powerful enough for the car, but not as much fun to drive when you're pushing it compared to a petrol. For everyday driving though, its a sure bet :) I'm looking for something with more grunt though, so it will most likely be the 2.0 tdci for me, but It'll have to wait a month or so. cuke Posted March 4, 2014 Share Posted March 4, 2014 I had a remapped 150ps ecoboost and the performance was very good, and it made a nice noise. I could also get 57mpg on a run with 36mpg around town. If you get a Bluefin from Superchips you can remove the map when the car goes into a service and I've never had that detected.
