Stoney871
You should be able to retrofit a limited slip diff but it can get a bit technical/complicated to set up precisely as backlash and torque settings need to be considered. It's the sort of job an Engineer would usually do.
vinnyvangough
To start with it depends how deep your pockets are. You can fit a 2.0l pinto and safely get 125-145bhp. Just enough power for an amatuer to get sideways. You could fit a 2.0 duratec and tune up to 200bhp, more reliable and better power. You could also fit a Cosworth lump and they are tuneable upto a safe 700bhp. Some have even gone up to 1000bhp. Friend of mine fitted a Nissan SR20DET lump in his Mk1 Escort and that was running nearly 300bhp. The sky is your limit, all depending on money and ability to do it. Much over 120bhp and the 1.3 gearbox will not be strong enough. You could weld the diff which is great fun, (My mk2 Escort has a welded diff) but you would be better off speaking to a company like Quaife to see what they recommend for your needs.
