Pencoedjohn
Hi, new to forum. I have a 1.6tdi zetec 59 plate. On the motorway I've had lots of vibration around 70mph even though wheels are balanced to zero. Lately the steering has felt strange, heavy then light. Going around tight left corners makes the steering very heavy and a rumble goes through the steering wheel. Nothing obvious looking underneath. The left shock could be off upright or the gator is sitting funny around it. Also makes a horrendous rattle/bang going up the the steps in the half surfaced roads of my estate. Any ideas? Thanks

Pencoedjohn
Electric power steering. It's in the garage now. They can't get it to react on a corner but they're taking it out again later. Nothing wrong with it mechanically when they had a look, bearings, cv joints. Could it be an intermittent fault with the power steering? ChrisCooper
I've got a 2.5 too, and doing 70 on a dual carriageway yesterday found the steering was vibrating quite a bit. I'd not noticed it on the motorway earlier in the day though, and doing 70mph on another dual carriageway today it was fine too. Makes me think there is something about the steering that is sensitive to certain road surfaces. Will be using the same dual carriageway I was on yesterday again on monday, so it will be interesting to see if it's the same.

MiltyG565
The rattling over bumps could be anything from a bushing to a broken spring, or spent shock absorber. The steering issue - if it was hydraulic power steering, the answer would be simple - power steering fluid. Since it's electric, it may be less of a fault, and more of an inherent flaw with electric power steering. my guess would be that it's trying to react to the situation, but failing, giving the impression that there's a problem.
