Sony stereo stuck in "phone" mode

Ive got a 56 plate Mondeo ghia with the Sony 6 cd stereo system , i was driving the other day and all of a sudden the sound went off and the stereo was displaying "phone",

It came back on its own later , but over the last few days it keeps doing the same thing, and no amount of button pressing helps!

Normally pressing the "phone" button on the stereo mutes the sound , but the display then says "audio muted", so iam at a bit of a loss really ,any help would be appreciated,

had this once where a phone car kit had been removed by cutting the wires instesd of removing them correctley, the cut wire was shorting out causing the radio to go into phone mode, is there any signs of a incar kit ever being fitted in the vechial, i am not saying this is the problem but you never know.
