Problem With Wheel Wander 2012 Fiesta

Featured Replies

hi

i was wondering if anybody has had a problem with wheel movement as i drive i feel as if the front drivers side wheel tends to wander/move. i have heard some people mention worn strut top mount or wishbone bush. was wondering if anybody else has had this problem

Have you checked the castor on both front wheels?

hi

no i have not checked the castor on both front wheels.

how do you check the castor on both front wheels?

Well an easy check, drive into your drive way and brake really hard, stop and apply hand brake.

Photo both sides of the car and see if one looks like it sitting closer to the front or rear of the wheel arch. can use a tape measure also to measure the distances horizontally between the arches.

if measurements are different on each wheel then I would say a wishbone is knackered, but could be a few different things.

Could also just be shot track rod, when driving straight is the steering wheel still centered?

Or even simpler the toe and wheel alignment is out

I was thinking it may just be the front wheel tracking. If its out you often find the car pulls towards which ever way the road cambers. It feels like its wandering.

Hi all

Thanks for the replys.

Never thought of tracking that's something I will get checked out

Hi mattdrx

When driving straight the steering is centred

Need to add something in when I did a full circle going right there is sime sort of rubbing noise

If too much / less castor it can rub on the arches when on full lock.

Did you manage to check the measurements? Or take some photos and post them up on here, 1 of each side from a reasonable distance would be ok.

Could also just be a bush though.

Doesn't look like a Castor issue, but from what I can see there is some noticeable negative camber in the Driver side, which can cause it to wander if the road is uneven / cambered itself.

We would need someone who owns the same car to give opinion though as some cars are made like that, wouldn't expect a Fiesta to though as the wheels are hardly huge and it's not a low sitting car.

If so it's just a simple tracking issue, just find a garage online that has Hunter Laser Alignment ( the check is usually free ) and not a lot of work, providing the track rod isn't broken it'll just need a few turns, the rods themselves will be about £40 plus a split pin if they use them and relatively quick to change.

Wait a tick, aren't both front wheels pointing in the opposite direction there? NS is pointing left and OS pointing right?

Hi

I never noticed that but I noticed before I took photos that the drivers side wheel was not sitting straight

Common thing on most cars dude, easy and cheap enough to sort just take it to a garage to sort it out, just try and get one that uses Hunter Alignment.

Those pictures certainly look like the wheels are towing out. How is the wear on the inside edge of the tyres?
