Sat Nav Retrofit

Featured Replies

Been wondering, does anyone know if it possible if you can retrofit the Sony Sat Nav in an ST-2 ? I was going to call the dealer and ask earlier but too busy. I'd imagine it would have to go to Ford for reprogramming etc, anyone done this or think it is possible?

Would probably be a straight swap as the maps is just an SD card, would need both the radio and the sat navigation monitor though as 2 separate items. Probably very expensive.

Would it not be the case of buying the larger screen and the surround and swapping it? Would you need the entire radio unit aswell then, I was hoping it could be a plug and play thing

I'd never waste money on a factory sat nav ever again. It's far cheaper to buy an after market unit & they're usually far superior, with things like 'safety' camera & live traffic information, as well as it being easier & cheaper to update the maps.

This unit does live traffic and it's actually pretty good. Signal picks up instantly no waiting about at all. But I do think you need both, even the pov spec head unit has a different sat navigation screen to the Sony. Really don't think one will work without the other, sync menus etc ate different also.

Why have 2 sat navs when a decent Tom Tom (for example) is superior & can be used car to car.

Because they look !Removed! and the batteries on them don't last forever and you have annoying cables in the way, factory ones mix with the stereo as well and kill the music when directions are given and resumes, no need to have to have a balance between them. Plus they are a really good resale point. 2nd hand cars fully speccd with these things sell for way more than the £400 premium when new. This sat nav is also just a tom tom sd card and updates are easy to get hold off.

Short answer from the dealer is no it can't be retrofitted, owe well as I said was just curious. Anyway one of my ST illuminated door sills packed up today on the drivers side :(

I wouldn't pay extra for a factory sat nav on a second hand car.

Dealers sometimes say something isn't possible when actually with the right know how it can be. Take cruise control as a prime example, that can be retrofitted with the right kit and technical knowledge.

My friends ST had an door sill that stopped lighting up, Ford will do it under warranty, it's a known fault :)
