Using Oil

Hey all. I have a mk1 1.6 petrol focus. Recently had a head change due to a crack about 1000 miles ago. Been fine until the last 50 miles or so. Noticed when I start from cold or put my foot down when cold I'm getting a puff of white smoke from the exhaust. I also had to put in 2litres of oil yesterday. oil cap and coolant are clean and there's no visible signs of fresh oil anywhere. Any ideas?

Check condition of the spark plugs.

Its quite common for the 1.6 zetec engine to break a piston ring and start burning oil. You either have to live with it or find another engine. Sorry for the bad news. What's the mileage?

108k miles. I assume it's to expensive to fix? I'll be checking the plugs tomorrow. Could it not just be a valve seal if it's when I first start up

There are diffrent reasons for oil to be burn or lost. You need to check spark plugs as they would tell you if the car is burning it. Or if they are covered in oil you have to replace the rocker cover gasket. If it's actually buring it then u have a ring issue. If you just loose oil check you have leaks. Or if oil randomly disappears it just maybe your not checking you oil as often enough.

It could be a valve stem seal and if it happened immediately after your head change then it would certainly fit but given you have done 1000 miles since then, I think it unlikely. As I said, its quite a common issue with the Zetec S engine to lose a piston ring at higher mileages. Repair isn't really an option. These engines were not designed to be refurbed, with their ladder crank caps, inline machined big end bearings and nikasil plated bores.
