No if you look on most bmw cars they dont even have them as standard

Hatchbacks generally have them. WHIch is why they are fitted to the 1 series, but not the 3 series etc...

I took my rear wiper off my mk2 fiesta and it passed many mots. Can't see why you would have a problem.
