Lowering A Mk2 Focus 1.8 Tdci

Featured Replies

I've spoken before about lowering my Focus and I was considering going down the Eibach pro-kit route. This has the advantage of being the cheapest way to lower the car without a requirement for camber adjustment and Eibach springs are considered to be fairly decent.

However, I know what I'm like and 30mm will not really do it for me. It might be ok to begin with, but I'll get bored and I'll end up putting something else on the car, which in the long run will be money down the drain.

I've previously owned Bilstein kits on my first car (99 Corsa) and my old 205 track car (dampers from the B12 kit) which I thought were not too bad. The B12 kit for the Focus isn't cheap though (£640 is the cheapest I've come across). And it uses the pro-kit, so again it'll be a 30mm drop. I've owned KW V1 innox coilovers on my Bora TDI, but I ran them at the lowest setting and I didn't really like them (pogo stick).

I've gone down the spring only option in the past with a big drop and I'll never do it again. H&R also sell 50mm springs for the mk2 but I'd need dampers to match. AP offer a suspension kit and coilovers but I'm not sure about them.

Has anyone dropped a mk2 a decent amount without ruining how the car drove? I know you can buy Eibach camber bolts to sort the camber on the rear. But the front of car apparently is not adjustable for camber so has anyone had to buy adjustable camber top mounts?

Or am I just dreaming of something I can't have?

My car has 50,000 miles and is a 07 plate (hence I'm ideally wanting to replace the original dampers and not just add springs). I'm running 17x7 alloys with 215/50/17 tyres.

Thanks,

John.

Just an update on this. I ended up buying AP coilovers and I'm very impressed with them so far. Quite similar to the KW V1 I had on the Bora in a lot of respects and the car feels great. It's lowered about 50mm, doesn't scrape anything and just feels "right" for me anyway. I'll need to get the camber checked (I have Eibach rear camber bolts just in case) and some hubcentric H&R spacers will make things look far better.

Here's some pics:

Re-map, spacers and centre exit cat back 2.5" system will round things off nicely :)
