Something Wrong Or Mind Playing Tricks On Me?

I have got a focus mk2.5. When I come off the gas and press the brake firmly. (not an emergency stop sort of brake) I can hear and feel a metal on metal knocking noise. I can feel it through my foot on the drivers footwell. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Might not be anything to do with the above but when I'm reversing left as I start to straighten the car I can hear a clunk.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Karl.

Definitely not the brake pads mate. Only checked them last week. There is plenty of meat left on them.

The rear brakes did size the other week but would I feel a knocking through the drivers footwell?

Cv joint,

Does it knock on full lock?

Switch off your ESP in the centre screen menu and see if it still happens

When I'm reversing it's on full lock yes. But the knock happens as I'm turning back to centre.

Would the esp turned off make the knocking stop?

CV joint can knock when turning mate,

ESP also makes clicking noises when active so worth a try,

Ok mate nice 1. If turning the esp off makes no difference would you say it's the cv joint needing replacing?

once on lock or when ever it happens?

The knocking I could hear started first. It happened once when reversing left just as I released full lock. Could feel this in the steering wheel.

Today it started knocking when braking firmly as I come off the gas. Now I can feel the knock through drivers footwell.

It only knocks the once each time I brake.

could it be the brakes sticking once applied then releasing on the lift off? have your pads got any movement in them to cause a noise?

I'll check them for movement but I'm not convinced it's the brakes themselves. The knock I can feel when braking happens whilst I'm still pressing the brake pedal so it's not on release.

Is there anyway I can.check the cv joint like lenny said?

I will strip down and check the brakes aswel.

the cv joint clicks once on part/full lock dependent on how badly worn... doesnt knock/click if in straight line etc, neither under braking......

So looks like I've got 2 problems then?

I'll check the brakes over tomorrow and report back.

Any other suggestions? as I'll already have the car jacked up etc.

Check your engine / gearbox mounts - especially the one at the back, under the car

The torque reaction from accelerating to braking can make a clunking noise with a lose/ damaged/ worn mount

Would also check your anti roll bar drop links ....... if these are worn you will get a knocking when you brake.
