06 Mk2 Ghia Lcd Odometer Glowing All Night.

Featured Replies

Hey all! New to the forum! Been a great help with the new car (bought a few weeks back)

Anyway I've noticed the odometer glows all night, I searched on here and a few people have said it's meant to glow for 10 minutes and then go out.

I have 3 month warranty on the car from dealer so wondering if this is a problem I need to get fixed or the norm??

(See pic, approx 2 hours after locking)

If the display of the instrument cluster stays illuminated continuously there is a problem with 1 of the CANbus modules of the car. The illumination of the display should switch off when the CANbus system goes into sleep mode. This should be about 15 to 30 min after locking the car. If the CANbus system does not enter sleep mode all CANbus modules stay active and will still use power. This can drain the battery in less thans 48 hours.

The continuously illuminated instrument cluster display is caused by a CANbus problem. 1 of the CANbus modules may be defect (or har a softwareproblem) and prevents the CANbus system from entering sleep mode. Every CANbus module of the car can cause this problem but my experience is that the radio and Bluetooth/Voicecontrol system (If present) are the 1st suspects. In cases of a software problem disconnecting the battery for about half an hour may solve the problem. This is definetely worth a try frist (mind the radio code).

Thanks man! I have a aftermarket Alpine stereo in there... Could this be an issue??

Its certainly one part that could be the issue.

Try for one night pulling the alpine out and refitting the original stereo, then see if it works

I'll try this tonight... I've seen a few people mention an ignition switch as a potential problem too..

yeah, if the pins dont all fall back then it can be enough to trick the CANbus into thinking the key is still in the ignition.

It was the stereo!! Put the original 6000CD, locked the door and the light went out!!

I'm guessing it might be something to do with the cheap harness I bought for it?

Do I need to be looking for a canbus compliant one? I notice all the steering control harnesses are canbus compliment, as I don't use steering controls I decided to get a standard audio ISO one... If I get a steering one will it work?

Thanks for your help!!

Ok odd one!

I thought that the 12v ignition cable might be the problem so I wired the stereo to be on 12v battery constant.. The LCD went off when Iocked the car!! I DONE IT, but to be sure I put the wiring back to normal and tested again.. The LCD also went off!

So to summarise, the radio is wired like the original post but the problem has gone!!

I conclude that either there was a iffy wire that got moved in the testing or pulling out the headunit and rep lugging cleared some canbus errors!

Very strange!!

Good result either way! it probably was just a bad connection possibly made by the cheap harness? either way its back now!

Ok, odd again.. Just looked outside and the LCD is lit once again... So I've just wired it to constant 12v battery and turned the stereo off.. Now to wait and see if it stays lit...

And.... No it's still on... Baffled by this now!

Seems to go off then come back on later...

I think I'll have to try one of the CAN BUS harnesses (I see the ford loom has a CAN + and CAN - which are currently not connected to anything so I suspect this May help!???)

If anyone can shine a light or offer some advice it would be great!

Thanks

C

Ok, decided to have a really good look at this harness and have found the problem.. I think!!

On the radio side there's a blue wire for power antenna, the harness connects this to "alarm sense" on the ford side! That's not right I though..

Disconnected this link and put the stereo back in and it's been fine, fingers crossed for tonight!

Definately sounds like it was tapped into the wrong wire!
