Led Lighting Mod.

Featured Replies

I need some help with this mod, I'm thinking I will have to tap into the driver foot well light.

I want to put led light strips on the side skirts. So when you lock and unlock doors the side skirts will light up.

I think this would make the car look so good at night.

And light up when in reverse so helps see curb at night to stop alloy scratching.

Any tips will help.

There will be grommets in the footwell pans under the carpets.

You could run wiring through there but be very sure that the holes are well sealed afterwards and that the wiring does not touch anything hot or likely to affect functionality/safety of the car.

Hi,

Best to run the cable through the grommet that the reverse light loom exits from,

You will require additional cable and a relay.

Run a single positive feed from the footwell lighting to the boot,

Followed by

A twin core loom to either side skirt,

In the boot splice the reverse light positive and negative,

2 way relay to ensure no overload,

And footwell feed,

Best to see my dual reverse light guide to show you

How to access the boot grommet,

Splicing cables,

Operation of a relay,

How to splice a relay,

And where to purchase everything from

Any questions feel free.

Just done a relay myself, nice and easy really! but I recon this could look pretty sweet, why stick at just LED's - why not go neons?!

neons draw too much power and soo 90's

LED is brighter and lower battery consumption :)

I need a bright light that will light up the curb as there is no light and I end up scrapping my alloys and if there is light the it's better.

EL's will give a good light spread without being too glary.

Which pins on the relay go where?

I need the lights to activate when I open the doors, turn off when doors are locked, turn on when in reverse and turn on with the remote for show purposes.

This is the best picture I have found as far as wiring a relay is concerned.

To summarise:

Pin labelled: Job:

85 Earth strap

30 or 51 Live connection (from Battery or fusetap)

86 The trigger wire

87 The end result.

Ok so I run a wire from the foot well light positive and connect to 87 and run a wire from reverse light to 87. Ground 85 to car body. Ground lights to car body and positive to 51 from car battery. 86 is going to be a signal wire? So run a positive feed to it when I wish to just have them on for show?

Na that's wrong. Can a relay take 3 signal inputs? Reverse, football, and show.

fit a 2 way switch and a relay,

I actually don't know how that would work? Would that mean I manually have to activate the lights then? What about 2 relay?

Interior positive option 1

Illuminated door option 2

Relay will then cut in for reverse regardless of switch option

So by default have them set to option 2

Reverse then cuts in automatically and option 1 for show happens when you flick the switch

That you. Do you know how to wire the complete thing up? Relay points and how to wire up the relay?

  • Author

Auto correct is crap. I mean Thank You.

what you would do is get a spade connector, and then run a wire from all the sources, and crimp them together, so you have three possible sources to trip the relay.

Then when any of the three send a signal down the wire it closes the switch in the relay and powers the devices.

so in your case:

Pin labelled: Job:

85 Earth strap - any source of earth (bolt, or tap into another existing earth wire.

30 or 51 Live connection (from Battery or fusetap) - Fuse it, or at least fuse 87

86 The trigger wire - so where you take the reverse, positive from the switched light, and into a remote switch (so for example, you could put another fusetap in that will then go into a 12v remote and also close the circuit.

87 The end result. - i.e. the positive to your LED's you want to use. then you just need to earth them

I have a 12v wireless remote that you basically put the positive and negative in both, then when you press the switch, it closes the connection and powers through the remote. only cost a tenner from amazon.

That you. Do you know how to wire the complete thing up? Relay points and how to wire up the relay?

yes :)

Ill do a guide later,

Heres my guide for GenLabs Relays you need a DRLR1 from genlabs if you dont already have a relay

http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/31832-guide-fitting-auto-dimmer-unit-from-gen-labs-to-gauges-or-drl/

Also see my reverse guide for the DRLR1 from genlabs,

Ive used it for my rear fog light

See link here, read the posts where ive explained the DRLR1

But if you attach att the feed together won't that trigger all the light to come on? For example I unlock doors the lights come on but so would the reverse light?

you may need two relays, ill write it out later around 17:00

The relay is one way flow,

It only sends power to the lights when reverse is active,

It cant send power from lights to reverse
