Oil Leak Help?

Featured Replies

Oil is leaking from here,it's a 1.6 zetec s fiestapost-42513-14022377488_thumb.jpg

The nozzle end has oil coming from it and it comes from the end going Into the gearbox too.what is it and how much to sort ?

Is it gearbox oil hard to make d pic out?

  • Author

Yeah its transmission fluid,it leaks more when the gears are selected, don't know what the part is even called.

It's leaking from the large rubber but centred in the photo

By the look of it, it doesent look like a bad leak the whole area doesent look wet or anything, you could try let it leak for a while till the transmission fluid level drops slightly (while keeping a close eye on the level( and top it back up with a good transmission stop leak might sort it out. Worth a try before sheadin out for a mechanic to repair

i gave it a wipe before I took the pictures to be honest,I've squeezed the rubber bit and the oils stopped coming out,I assume more will come out when I turn the engine over though?

It won't be driven until the end of the month so I've got time to do things on it,it's uninsured at the moment as I only bought it today,it's the only thing I've found wrong with it (although annoyed as the bloke swore it's never leaked which is an obvious lie)

I understand why ur pi.ss.ed. I bough my fiesta 1.25 zetec's with a similar problem only on mine its leakin out where the drive comes out of the gear box I tough it was bad from first inspection, first thing I done got a litre of gearbox fluid/ transmission fluid to top it up opened the gear box top up/inspection nut and transmission fluid comes straight out which means it did not need to b toped up 6 months on where the drives come out of gearbox still wet but gearbox fluid level hasnt droped. These things can squeeze out a egg cup full of fluid a year and with it being oil a lousy drop can look like a point came out. Is it drippin on ur yard? Or is the car Jus a bit wet

It was dripping,I had the motor on and it started smoking but the oil temp was good on the dial turned it of and had a look underneath and it looked like the steam was coming from the exhaust ,but I was looking from the drivers side underneath, pulled it on the drive and jacked it up and that's all I can see, smelt of oil burning at first aswell

Theres no gauge for the transmission maybe only a low level light that will come on on ur dash when its really low. Theres a Temperature gauge for the cooling of the engine which is coolant/water not oil. And an oil light for ur engine iswel. You have clutch and brake fluid.... Engine oil. And transmission oil there usualy all seperate apart from clutch and brake fluid on most cars its the same.. Hope this helos

  • Author

The smoking I beleive was the bits of transmission oil splurting onto the exhaust as I changed gear

If its really that bad thers no stop leak that will stop it. Only job for it is ur mechanic. If its losing that much I wouldnt recomend driving it till you have checked the trany oil level. Hope the gearbox doesent have to come out £££££ itl cost u

put the same post up on the ZSOC and got a reply (bit dead over there) from a person who had the same thing,he sorted it himself, its just a seal i beleive.

In the centre on of the pic is that a spring or a rubber? Is it the linkage for the gears coming from the gear stick into the gearbox? Sorry Its hard make out from the pic could you put up another pic lookin at the same thing from slightly further away. Cheers:-)

If it is what I tink it is pop down your local motor factors and order an O'ring for ur make an model. Put ur car in fourth gear and remove linkage followed by the seal but try keep the gear stick in the fourth gear position ( this will make it easier put it back togheter) once u disengage the linkage the gear stick will become floppy if u lose where it was itl be pritty much trial an error to get it back ri. But anyway pry out rhe old seal while tryn not damage were the new seal has to sit in. Find something thats the same size as the seal, put the seal against the houseing and tap it in evenly trying not to damage it (dmage it and ur back were u started) once its sittin in put the tool/bar/bottle jack pole even thats the same size as the o ring against it and tap it carefully this will help it go in evenly usualy a pipe or something similiar. Then its prity much putin it all back togheter. Make sure clean down were the old seal came out bofore puting in the new one. Its pritty easy getin the linkage back ri if u do lose its posistion dont worry it just takes playing around with it to get it back ri. Could take 5 mins or an hour but youl get there. Its a pritty basic job

Yeah it's the rubber bit, they're low cars so it's not easy to get a further pic :p

How do I remove the linkage,is it just that one bolt I assume?i ordered a seal kit last night so should come Tuesday

Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC

Ye should be just one bolt some may have two. If if you cant get the linkage off they can be awkward for room try loosen it at the bottom gear stick might be a nut there iswel or a ball joint type of connection with a small clip youl have to pop out. How much did the seal/kit cost??

  • Author

£15 not sure if that's good or bad but it's done now.

Noticed it won't creep forward on the clutch,it's needing throttle to move,is that a sign of needing a clutch?

Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC

A bit more detail on that Ben? Do u mean when driving the car when u realeas the clutch it wont begin to move without acceleration?

Yeah that's it,it won't actually move unless I accelerate which sounds like a dodgy clutch to me

Sent from my iPhone using Ford OC

Was your last car a diesel? Most diesels can take off with realeasing the clutch and without acceleration, well any diesel I drove anyway. And any petrol I drove realeas the clutch with no acceleration the engine will cut out straight away. How to test it, start engine, pull the hand brake put the car in first with the clutch pressed in rev the car to 3000 rpm release the clutch slowly if the reves start dien down your clutch is good. You will akways know a bad clutch itl either slip i.e if you go to over take a car an put your foot down and the car reves up and doesent pick up speed then its a bad pressure plate/fly wheel which is clutch.

  • Author

Yes mate besides when I took my lessons and test I've only driven diesels lol, happy to hear it isn't the clutch.it was weird driving something that revved for so long too :p

Selector shaft seal. Use a dot punch or make a mark as wherr you gearbox link dettaches so you dont get stuff gear if you dont put t in the same posistion. And remove the seal and replace an tap it in.

Clutch control on diesels is so easy compared to petrols. Whats ur insurance Ben thats a prity quick car when ur 19 is it costly?

  • Author
