What Car & Jd Power

Featured Replies

This months mag has results of the JD Power survey and they also pitch a Fiesta against the Mito and Audi A1 (the Fiesta wins of course) but a few things annoy me.

The rear seats are difficult to fold. What? You push a button and drop them down. What's hard about that?

The windscreen wipers give problems. I cannot recall people saying this.

Rear legroom is tight. Yes it is but it's a Fiesta so if you want rear legroom you buy a bigger car.

The steering wheel is too chunky. No it isn't unless you have pixy hands. It feels just right and better than some weedy thin rim.

The dashboard is too fussy. This one keeps coming up from journalists because they look at the radio and think it's confusing because it's got more than 3 buttons but if you are an owner you get used to it very quickly.

They also say a lot of positive stuff but they do talk some rubbish sometimes.

I kind of agree with the dashboard. But I am a bit of a minimalist tbh!

They seem to be nit picking there really, no real issues - they probably just had to say something bad to balance out how good the fiesta compares to the other two!!

Besides, most reviews are subjective unless we are comparing facts and figures so take them as 'opinions' :P

It annoys me too when road testers say about fussy or confusing dash layouts , when they're testing different types of car I suppose it would initially be strange but you'd soon get used to it the longer you had the car I love my fiesta I can't really fault it I suppose a bit more storage wouldn't go amiss but thats nit picking really

What's interesting is how much better my 2014 Ecoboost 1 litre Fiesta is over the same 2013 car. Driving on exactly the same roads in exactly the same conditions the 2014 car returns a good 5 mpg more that the 13 plate car. It was the original 1 litre Ecoboost that got all the plaudits from the press, yet it's this year's model which has had countless undocumented improvements that should be king of the Superminis.

The fez is by far the best looking and most popular small car

What can be fussy about the dashboard? Everything is where you would expect to find it.

In terms of the console I think the standard one looks better and is better laid out than the sony one, but each to their own.

How much is an A1 anyway?

The only feedback i'd seen of the wipers were that they were too short on launch? they had to put slightly longer ones as the coverage was poor (it did seem a bit of an afterthought really). After having the current Focus i do miss not having one wiper on each side of the screen!

im not sure if this is what theyre referring to though...

Dashboard wise, its the Sony radio that does annoy me! the standard one is more logical, the sony one is designed by an idiot. its like it was styled for styles sake, so nothings in the right place ! can easily lose a few buttons on there

In terms of their rival test though, the A1:

  • is made with nicer materials on the inside.
  • the infotainment screen and multi-function steering wheel is much nicer

but ..theres just not much to it?

  • the seats were wrong - support was all in the wrong places
  • boot size is a joke
  • The stereo may have fewer buttons (like a basic MMI rotary system) but its still as big a baff to get navigate!
  • and the pedals, gearchange and steering were more damped so it might give a 'grown up feel' but it detracted from any enjoyment to be had!i found it really boring to drive,

so in my mind youre not really paying extra for much in return?

The word 'neutral' sums it up for me (yawn!)

End of the day really it's whatever the potential owner prefers. I'm sure points could go back and forth between all day when comparing similar cars.

I've never been 100% sold on the dash, but the way the fiesta handles and the 1.0 ecoboost engine is what sold me.

Point is, it's just a matter of opinion.

Audi a1 is nice but once you start on the options list ...... ouch !
