Ecoboost Oil Warning Light

Featured Replies

Hi, I just purchased this car at 9 months old with 9500 miles on the clock. I am interested to know other Ecoboost owners experience on the following.

On first start in the morning the red oil warning light takes around 5 seconds to extinguish, accompanied by a slight tappety rattle from the top end of the engine until the light goes out. After that it is fine for the rest of the day. I know the oil filter is horizontally mounted so maybe it is just the anti-drain valve in the filter not doing its job properly. The oil level is correct. Are they 'all the same' to quote a dealers favourite phrase, or should I take it in straight away?

Take it in, the rattle is obviously oil starvation at top end until the oil reaches and the light goes out. Not normal at all. Light should be out when started.

Thank you Nathan for your reply, funny enough I just started it from cold and timed it and the oil light took about 3 seconds to go out today. The rattle is more of a light ticking noise so maybe that is the hydraulic lifters before they are fully pressurised. The Ford dealer I bought the car from (quite far from where I live) supposedly did the first service before I collected it and stamped the book. However I have my suspicions as the oil looks quite dirty on the dipstick and I can't even see the filter to check if it looks new as it is buried deep down at the back of the engine and the under tray covers it below.

I do know that the 1.0 Ecoboost engine has a variable displacement oil pump that pumps at a lower rate at low rpm as a fuel saving measure, so I thought maybe this was why the slight delay to build pressure on first start. However will get it checked out.

Yeh worth getting checked out, could always change the oil and filter yourself for peace of mind if it looks dirty.

But if it's in warranty I wouldn't worry, let them do it.
