Could be a pulley on the auxiliary belt, does it change pitch or disappear when you dip the clutch?

My MK6 made a similar noise! I found it was after the engine got a tad hot! Only did it very intermittently had the car for about 18 months and nothing never really developed though! Could be a different whine though so don't take my word for it! :P

Sorry about the late reply - have you checked the generator belt ?

If it's starting to wear it'll stretch slightly, which means it can slip when you start to rev the engine. Usually the sound comes when doing a start from standstill or overtaking in a low gear (again the revs doing it). It'll not be there when cruising at a steady speed.

If that's what it is, the belt can be tightened - however I'm not sure how simple it is to do on the Fiesta.

On my old Corolla you just loosened one or two nuts and pulled the generator further away and tightened it again.

I have this and ive been told its the thrust bearing on the gearbox and a 400 pound job to change apparently
