Feint Whining Noise From Gearbox? At 50Mph+

Hi all, I've just bought a 2011 1.6 Titanium 3d manual and am really pleased with it, except for one thing:

...there is a "whine" noise when doing 50+ which cannot be heard over the radio because it's quite slight and stops if I press in the clutch.

I'm pretty sure it still does it if I go down to 4th gear whilst at the same speed (engine noise drowns it out I guess then). I've looked on the Internet and there are others with seemingly the same issue which apparently is normal. Does this sound familiar to any of you guys? Someone described it as an earth humming noise. Which whilst that isn't what it is, describes it well.

Thanks :)

Clutch bearing or wheel bearing, if you maintain those revs you are doing in 5th in say 3rd but a lower speed does it do it?

Hi Matt. Thx. Definitely not the wheel bearing because it goes if I press in the clutch. And it's only after a certain speed, seemingly regardless of engine revs.

Sounds like gearbox/clutch.

Notify the dealer in writing that you have this issue so that if there is a failure later you have better chance of claiming.

Update: I've had my local Ford dealer have a very quick look (whilst doing some other work, so it really was a quick look) and also A1 Clutches. I've also described the issue to an independent garage. All of them, where applicable, can hear the whine noise no problem, but no one can say what it is, nor do A1 or the independent want to attempt a fix. I seem to be running out of options. My local Ford have said they can have the car in for half a day at a cost of £80 inc VAT to attempt a diagnosis. I am just concerned they will say there is no fault and I have to live with the noise (and charge me £80 for effectively nothing) :(

So my car went in and Bristol Street Fords Master Technician couldn't hear the noise, but others could. He is convinced its normal and actually air going through the intake valve (think that's what he said). They didn't charge me a penny so can't really fault them. I am not convinced he is correct. I really don't know what to do now :(
