Focus Mk2 Passenger Side Rattle

Right, seriously annoyed off now with this rattle. It happens under heavyish acceleration all the time. Sounds like it's coming from front passenger side but I can't pin point it at all. I've searched Google and stuff for a solution but no one seems to know exactly what it is. Some people said could be wheel arch lining but it sounds too 'light' to be that. Anyone here know what it is ?

Why not jack up the passenger side and try to push pull on different parts to see if anything is loose.

Heat shielding around the exhaust or engine bay?

I had a quick look under the car at the exhaust shielding but that seems more central whereas the rattle sounds like it's coming from more to the left of the car. I'll Jack up the car today and see what's going on.

Normally if you jack it up and take the wheel off. You can find it with a tap of a rubber mallet.

give the wheels some movement see if there is any play in this, also it could be the top mounts as well.

Ok thanks, I'll get the wheel off and see what I can find. Hopefully it's just something simple. From reading around lots of people seem to get this specific rattle on mk2 focus with no luck in getting it fixed.

My mk2.5 focus has a rattle and sqeek I've so far narrowed it down to top mount, lower arm bush and stabiliser drop link. Sometimes it's just a process of elimination.

Well I think I've found the problem. Had the car jacked up ready to get the front wheel off, opened rear door to get something and after closing it I heard the rattle. Turns out it the exhaust heat shield that's rattling about. Its not really that loose but even tapping it makes an awful sound. So I think I'll leave it in to the mech beside work to see what he can do.

You could be right. I'd have to take the whole !Removed! thing off though to get at it.

Could you not get a long screwdriver to pike around and try and dislodge it.

it's all torx screwed on and quite central, I wouldn't get enough reach without it being up on a lift.

there is another way. If it is just a stone, jack the back up and hit the undershield with a rubber mallet. this should tell you straight away and if you hit it well enough, you could end up dislodging it enough and knock it backwards, if its tilting back anyway you might find that you knock it a few times and it comes out.

Sometimes you get the edges of adjacent sections of the heatshield rattling against each other, sometimes there's a bit of foam on there to stop that but it can fall off or be in the wrong place - if it's the shields rattling against each other you can try some foam in hte gap or bend the edges over where they meet to hold them together better.
