Retro Fit Sound Symposer

Featured Replies

i have a 1.6 ecoboost focus and will be looking at modding it in the winter. one thing i would like to do is give it more growl. As standard its not bad at high revs, especially off of my old diese but i would still like more sound :)

At first i was thinking of either fitting some sort of induction kit or exhaust system to do this but my insurance will go up :/

so i've been looking at the sound symposer like in the ST.In theory its exactly what i want but it looks like its only avaliable if you get the mountune mp200 kit, its a £50 add on to this kit but how easy is it to retrofit yourself? has anyone tried it or knows where to start?

cheers, josh

You need the symposer itself and the correct hose with the symposer take off attachment pipe.

For info, this is what the MK2/2.5 RS one looks like-

TBH a fair few people with the MK3 ST have blanked the symposer off as they reckon it's useless.

I drive a MK3 ST estate for work and the symposer was removed as it was reported to cause a possible failure point on the hoses.

My previous focus 1.6 ecoboost 180 had a symposer as standard - I'm surprised yours doesn't have that too?

It was on my 2011 1.6 Ecoboost, they all had it...

i apologise i've just had a look and found it ^_^ i will have to look into fitting an induction kit instead now !! anyone got any good suggestions ?? it always worries me though on changing the intake to let in more air as its less restrictive on dirt too

could someone explain what a sound symposer does?

its essentially a tube that channels engine noise into the cabin; cars have so much soundproofing nowadays to make them more refined, they filter out the decent noise too!

So in Fords case, they connect a tube from the intake to the firewall to try bring some of the decent noise into the cabin too to bring a bit more character.

In my mind its a bit like a stethoscope really

its a controversal addition, but its natural noise at least and better than having it pumped through your stereo speakers in my opinion

could someone explain what a sound symposer does?

They tend to be used on turbocharged cars as by it's nature a turbo muffles the exhaust note of the engine.

As above the symopser is used to channel noise into the cabin, it's usually made up of reed valves and such to produce suitable noise off the intake system. Was found that this tends to give similar sound to a non-turbo engine, and of course also lets them give some more noise to the driver without sounding loud outside.

Link here from Mann-Hummel, who manufacture them for Ford amongst others.

If one of those can be plumbed in you may be able to get one cheap (or free) off someone who's removed one when fitting an external dump valve to a Focus RS or ST.

Oooo ok thankyou for the replys. Everyday is a lesson as they say lol

In all fairness, the STs system is a bit more sophisticated than the 1.6's isn't it?

I'm not sure what difference it might do fitted to your engine, but there could be one spare going from those who've ripped theirs out!

I think its exactly the same set up in the ST but the points at which the valve opens may be timed differently!

Ah you're right, it's based on throttle position - my mates st can be on full volume but cruising at just 30!

just to say i dont want one, dont think it would suit a diesel anyway haha, but good to know :)

I've read a test of the mountune kit for the 1.6T. It seems that their sound symposer is different. Probably the same as in the st's which is an active sound symposer.

I'm interested in the mod too.

I'll contact a shop licensed by mountuned to get infos. Anyone know of st's waste sound symposers?
