Removing The Expansion Tank On A Mk6

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

so went to have a look at my friends 02 plate 1.6 Fez at lunch (early MK6) and we found a split in the coolant tank. Having removed the bolt from the LHS I then noticed that it was hookde at the back to the bulkhead, but for the life of me could not figure out how to get it off.

Am I missing a simple trick? I dont have access to a Haynes guide so if someone can drop me a bit of a heads up on it that would be appreciated!

The chap is going to get a quote from his dads mechanic friend, but if its too much he is happy for me to do the work, although I dont really want to have to destroy his existing one I will if I have to!

I can remember having to remove one before on a mk6 and iirc it also need shifted to change the headlight bulb. Is it not just a bolt and a rubber mount? I can't remember it being hooked on anything?

nah on the MK6 you have a 10mm bolt (I think) oin the left hand side holding it down on the panel, then on the rear, it just seems to be like a hook coming up from the bulkhead with the tank on it.

Sadly I didnt capture any photos as I let me phone run outa juice! but heres the catalogue pic :

Look at the RHS (about 4 o clock) this is the bit that slides onto the bulkhead, kinda works like a spade connector is the only way to describe it. but I undid the bolt, tried wiggling and it wouldnt move, then tried being a little more forceful without breaking it, that didnt work, tried pushing the metal "spade" back to try and let it slip over, that didnt work either!

from memory I'm sure it just lifted away... hopefully someone who has done this recently will be able to confirm for you though mate

aye, otherwise, as I will probably be draining the tank anyway, I will just wrench it off and shatter the box if needs be lol!

Nothing like a bit of violence to finish off a mealtime!

then tried being a little more forceful without breaking it,

That is all that holds it inplace so I would say be more forceful with it when you come to replace it! The hoses can be awkward to remove though so may be worth taking a selection of pliers/hose pliers if you have them?

I have some pliers somewhere in the abyss that is my car :p

The only thing I dont like is the funky clips they use, they arent the screw tight jubilee clips, they just seem to be the special ones that look to me to be single use only... Might have to have a go at substituting those if he wants me to do the job!

Are they the spring type clips James? Can you send a picture?

nah cant send a picture just yet, but it might be the spring type...

Have you got pump pliers? They are great on the spring type ones

nah, just got the basics like locking pliers, needle nose etc. other than that though not got any.

I really could do with getting a picture though, but if he decides to use my services I will get the picture, if hes going with his mechanic then I will leave him to it :D
