Tdci Intercooler Question

I would be interested to know how you get in with the upgraded intercooler, I was looking at the ST ones as they are slightly bigger they have about 4 or 5 more rows than the one fitted on my 1.8, not sure if it'll be worth the bother of changing.

I like the idea of it but I decided not too. It looks the part now with the car and suits it quite well :). Nope bumper stayed on. It's very easy to do. That easy it took 30 minutes.

Right here's a cheeky pic of it fitted. Will do a full write up tonight as I haven't driven it yet. It took 30 minutes to remove everything and refit it and start the car to leak check the pipework.

Update.... Intercooler will be fitted this Saturday and a good test drive will be done and a review with pictures of installed will be provided for anyone else who is thinking about doing this. One step close to the remap. Just need enough funds for exhaust change, Dpf gut and remap. Just started new job so it won't be for a while though. It does have more rows I believe. Not many more as far as I can see but I won't know until both are out side by side. But everything else about the new cooler is that all the other dimensions are the same and the inlet/outlet pipes are in the same place. Do bring in Saturday.

Gave myself abit of a fright today. Just finished polishing my intercooler and I thought I'd go to my car and count the rows. It's got ten and the aftermarket one has 8. So then I thought of measure the original one. That's when I got scared. The original one is bigger!!! I measured from one end of the rows to the other. But then I removed the wind reflectors and measures the entire length and it's the same size as the original. I then measured where the mounts were and they are in the right place. I thought thank god for that or is havea big cry. Anyways here are some ppictures of it before and after polishing.

The cooler is currently drying off after being washed inside with megs gold class. Loads of stuff came out. It's had a layer of AG EGP as that's the only sealant I've got to hand.

Anyways here we go....

After polishing with nushine. Aircraft polish for stainless.

And I polished the front and removed the painted logo. It's still got it on the back. I'd much rather something shiny :) these pics are it during I haven't got anything after as sealant is curing.

I decided I finish off the cooler so here are the final shots of it. It's not the best but Its the best I could do with the tools I had to hand.

I used a das6 pro with Nushine for stainless steel and other alloys. Its not an aggressive compound as I just wanted to clean the stains off and add some shine. Once polished it was refined with megs ultimate compound. Once refined cooker was jet washed and cleaned inside with megs gold class shampoo. Cooler then rinsed after about ten minutes of soaking and a fair bit of crud came out but not too bad as this cooler was in a st before.

Final shots

Look forward to the review once fitted mate looks nice and shiny :)

It does look good if I say so in comparison with it before. I like shiney bits just hate cleaning them lol. I'm hoping pictures and review will be posted tomorrow evening if not it will be sunday. I'm hoping for some difference with the car. It should do as it's a much higher flow rate than original one, the fins on the original are so close together it makes you wonder if any air is getting through to cool it down.

Not being fitted today will be tomorrow. But i was thinking about spraying it black and now having second thoughts about it? Do i or sont i have just bought everything to do it but now I'm not sure? I know it will only benefit in traffic but no where else? What do you think?

  • Author

I've decided not to spray it. I have spent about 12 hours polishing it so I've decided to polish it again so see if I can rake some of the deeper scratches out. Pictures on the way.

Probably for the best after all that hard work, i'd go for the polished look too. Hopefully the fitting goes well, i'll defiantly be in a bit more of a rush to change mine if you notice any benefits.

I quite like shiney stuff. But then with the painted look I guess it would be for the stealth look and possibly more efficient. But then if it was completely true but I'm sure if this was the case then all intercoolers would be black? I'm giving it another polish and abit of a wet sand to get more of the corrosion out. But now it's proving more difficult to get the polish look back. I've just been using 2k wet and dry and 2.5k then cutting polish and then megs ultimate compound to refine it.

Haha I wasn't expecting that, it must of took a bit of practise!

Genius imagination to associate the harp with an intercooler, followed by skill to be capable of playing it like ya should

Im gonna get myself one of these intercoolers bleedin massive see vid below

That intercooler is ridiculous, my first car was smaller than that!

Jesus that's a missive cooler! You'll need a jet engine to get any sort of air flow through that! Cooler has been repolished and re sealed ready for tomorrow. I'm debating whether to keep the wind deflectors or not? There not invreat condition but I guess it will help the intercooler further by directing extra air towards the cooler.

bit small isn't it...........

bit small isn't it...........

 exterior mount in front of the bumper and fit two Periscopes on the bonnet in order to see the road in front.
