Focus Mk2 Engine Noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

Recently purchased a 57 plate Focus with the 1.6 ti-vct engine.

I have some concers with the engine, firstly it sounds like the engine fan is running all the time its like a whirring/wooshing noise. It's there all the time whether moving or stationary or hot or cold. Not sure if it's ment to be like that, car's only covered 38k with a full service history.

I also get what i can only describe as someone blowing on the top of an empty glass bottle when driving along at certain speeds. The engine/exhaust also booms when i plant my foot from a lowish speed.

Theres also a bearing type whine once the car's got up to temp, only really notice when rev'd at idle

Question for other owners of these engines, how quick does it get up to temp? Mine seems to take under a mnute of normal driving and its allready bang on halfway. Never had a car get up to temp that quick even in the hotter weather..

The car drives well, pulls hard through the gears but im just concerend by the above. Allready had ford look at it and they have said they cant find anything wrong.

Regards,

Mish

Temp is normal mine can be at half before I have got 200 metres down the road.

At least my mind is at rest on that one

I have a Focus 1.6 Ti-Vct also with 30k on the clock and full service history.

I get what you mean about the engine noise my engine has a bit of a raspy note when the engine is under load. Like a rushing air sound that is distinctive on a turbo'ed motor.

Also my temp gauge will sit a cold until I drive up a few streets then it just shoots up to the half way mark and sticks there! Also I have came out to my car an hour or two later after a drive and it heats up instantly!

The fan will be the aircon if its set to windscreen the fan runs all the time when the aircon is on

The bottle noise is the air intake design which is a cold air feed down in the rear of the front arch liner

Bearing noise is the aircon the pump is a vss variable pump that regulates the gas instead of switching on and off like old ones tends to do it louder when its needing a refill

As for the temp mines geadual cold to quarter to halfway or just slightly under it heats up quickly in the warm weather we have when it gets colder it isnt so quick

Arthur have you done any exhaust or intake mods to your Ti-Vct?

(By intake mods I mean a different filter within the same air box setup as ford's design is the best for cold air with minimal heat soak)

no i was told from a very experienced and good ford master tech that he didnt advise it with this engine all ive done is add an extra cold air feed into the airbox by cutting a round hole fitting some large hose into the hole and then using a large hose clip to ensure it stays in place i then sealed it with marine sealant which turns into a rubber like substance and the other end of the hose sits behind the passenger headlight also added a kandn panel filter

So it all sounds pretty normal then.

Funny you should say about the aircon casuing the whine as i used it for the first time the other day and it wasn't cold at all, so will get that re-filled as it's probably really low.

Another question i have is about the bluetooth, looking on ETIS it looks like it came with everything needed for bluetooth, i have the voice button on the stalk etc and the mic behind overhead light. It dosn't look like it works as all i get is audio muted when i press any of the phone buttons on the head unit.

Im guessing it's either faulty or needs a reset. Anyone got any tips to get it working?

Cheers,

Mish

not sure on the bluetooth mate i dint get that on mine but it does take a minute or so for aircon to get proper cold but the ratlle whine noise is very common when its running low takes around an hour to do and well up here at least you can get it done for £39

Which headunit sony or visteon? Also remove the glovebox and check if there is the bluetooth module there, if there is check the part number. There are some good threads on here relating to bluetooth. I retrofitted it to mine. If you have the stalk/overhead light with the mic, then one would assume you have hands free. Do you also have a usb socket in the centre armrest or glove box?
