High Running Costs On Automatic Car

Featured Replies

I have a Fiesta Automatic, acquired November 2013, new from factory. I am finding the cost of fuel way too hight. The average MPG is 29 . I drive to work 13 miles each way and smaller trips to shops or to visit. I am only getting one full tank to last me just over a week.. I realise that automatics are higher on fuel consumption but I didn't expect my petrol costs to almost double. I rarely drive faster than 45 mph, to try and keep the costs down but I am finding this care too expensive to drive.

That's probably about right for those sort of journeys, you need to have an average speed of around 30mph to be making decent economy. What's yours saying?

What engine size is it Liz?

Also are your runs at a constant speed or are there a lot of slowing down and speeding up?

Must admit I would be appalled at 29mpg !

I agree that MPG seems very low, I commute only about 15 miles in total each day, and along with a mixture of longer and shorter journeys I managed about 37 mpg when I filled up yesterday. I'd think the ST should be the least economical of Fiestas even when compared to an auto.

I too agree it sounds very low, I only commute 8 miles to and from work (so 16 miles a day, but over two trips) and even during winter with a cold engine and all I get around 38-40 MPG.

I'm curious to know which engine you have Liz - if it's an ecoboost I'd ask dealership to look at it, it simply sounds like something isn't right.

EDIT: My average speed is around 30 mph.

Hi Liz,

I don't have an automatic but do have a manual Fiesta which is about 3 months newer than yours. What is your overall distance traveled to date? Reading other posts on here the Fiesta takes a little while to get into the mood for fuel efficiency. When I first started driving mine (It's litres per 100km here) I was getting about 9l per 100km, which is about twice what it should be. Now the overall average is 7.3 since the start so it has improved - as no doubt has my driving style. So far for me I have found the Fiesta to only really hit the famed claimed 4.3l/100 when I am cruising on a relatively easy road also when I adopt a more eco friendly driving approach e.g. starting to slow down well in advance of red lights. Any form of city or town driving seems to kill the fuel efficiency, here we are limited to between 30-50km/h in the city. Do you also regularly check the current fuel usage on the main console? If you put it into that display mode you can really use it to optimise your driving.

Although I guess the tips on gear changing are not so useful :) I try to implement what they suggest when sensible and it has made a big difference.

Cheers,

Rod

I Have a prefacelift 1.6 liter and I too drive 95% of the time in town and my fuel avg is about 7.4l per 100km, I'm sure if I had to do a long distance on the open road I sould get it to below 7l/100km.

PS. not all auto's are worse on fuel than manuals, for instance The golf 5 the family had was very good with the DSG gearbox and I remember reading that it was sipping less fuel than the same model with a manual gearbox, I don't know if the Fiesta's gearbox is as good as that was.

Stephan, on the open road it is much better. I can easily get it to sit on up to 5.5l per 100KM (quite often nearer 4.5l) when driven in a eco friendly way; although that does mean driving is not as much fun sometimes. Hence I tend to only do that on nice easy bits of road.
