Air Con Clutch/compressor Clicking In/out Even When Aircon Off

Featured Replies

Hi

I seem to have a real issue with the air con, and have searched and searched for an answer to this problem.

I have a MK1 Focus 1.8zetec and the air con works well to cool the car, but there seems to be an underlying issue with this.

Firstly, whether the air con is on or off the loud clunk that seems to be common with these cars occurs every 10(ish) seconds.

Secondly, with that loud clunk the engine then struggles for around 5 seconds. When I say struggles - at 3000 revs (sitting on the drive), the engine will then drop to less than 2500 rpm and sound very lumpy, then return to 3000rpm 5 (ish) seconds later until the next clunk.

Is there anything I can to to stop this - I'm almost ready to take it to the local garage to sort out, but after reading stories of the parts costing £200+ I'd rather see if I can do something myself to save some labour costs.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Here's a video thats shows the effect on the engine revs: http://youtu.be/qR0kPP7BFV8

Update: I've removed the relay for the aircon and this removes the problem, so it's definitely an aircon related issue.

andy.

sounds like an issue with the clutch engaging the compressor, I would suggest tht you get it to an air con specialist for review.

Sometimes you get this when the gas is low but enough to keep it going. Still worth getting the system serviced.
