Rear Brake Bleeding

Featured Replies

Hi guys got the conversion done from drum to disc and due to work j only get weekends to work on it, this weekend when i had the chance i went to bleed them and hay presto nothing. I cleaned out the nipple and checked everything, there is Fluid getting to the caliper but not bleeding thru the nipple, so i am wondering is it possible that when i pushed the cylinder back in is it possible to push it to far into the caliper so that it stops the fluid pushing on the cylinder? If so whats the best way to push it out abit so that the fluid runs back thru again? Am considering just getting refurbs a pair from ebay 130

Is the nipped blocked? Try taking the bleed nipped out then blowing some compressed air through the little hole.

Can you pm me with what parts you got to do the conversion please as it's something I would like to do myself.

don't know if this is relevant but this looks looks a good piece of kit to aid with brake bleeding. I'm planning on buying myself in a few weeks to do brakes on brothers car.

The nipples aint blocked i checked. The parts i got, was rear hubs, the carrier and caliper. I got new discs and pads and handbrake cable. Ive not got a compreser but will a tyre compressor do?

I've used that Gunsons kit and it's a breeze. Just make sure you lower the pressure of the tyre you're using to pressurise it to 20psi max.

Thanks for the feedback I have just ordered it for myself. Hopefully it should be a great asset to the tool box.

The pistons will only wind back in so far. Are both calipers having the same issue?

Hi yeah both side are, the thing is the passenger side dribbles. Im thinking just get some refurbs and clean these up. Im sure it wont make much diff but the car is raised on axle stands still???

Ive read using a tyre compresor that u can remove the cylinder that way aswell??

It won't matter that the car is in axle stands, it will still allow fluid out.

What does the brake pedal feel like when bleeding?

Hi, the pedal feels like the pressure is building up so i have to start the engine to release the pressure for bleeding. The rubber hose the goes into the caliper i removed and fluid came out so defo the caliper, wounding if its an easy thing to sort myself or just spend 130 on some refurbs??

So the pedal stiffens up but not bleeding from the rear, and i know that the fluid is getting to the caliper fine just not thru to the bleed valve. The valves are clean and not blocked

Are you using the 2 man bleed method?

When the pedal goes hard, keep pressure on it and open the bleed nipple. This should let the pedal drop and fluid should come out. Don't let go of the pedal until you have closed the bleed valve though

Nope the one man system, the nipple is undone even taken it out and tried it. Gonna try and clean the caliper inlet at the weekend and loosen it again and pump the pedal and hold it, if nothing just get the refurbs but be good to get these working

Try working the handbrake lever to push the piston out slightly then try bleeding again

You can try blowing the pistons out with an air compressor but remember to put something across the caliper to stop the piston coming out completely - big flat tyre lever with a rag around it or something similar should do the trick.

If you've got access to a compressor etc it may be worthwhile taking the calipers off the car and trying them out in a vice, working pistons in and out with the airline. Also if you can move the piston partially out then block it up, putting the airline on again with bleed nipple removed should help clear any obstructions in the caliper. Or you could put the airline on through the bleed nipple hole and leave the brake line fitting open.

Just be careful with eye protection while there's brake fluid being blown about as part of this process :)

hi guys just got in from trying the tyre compressor trick, well the cylinder moved, so I cleaned out inlet and the bleed nipple still nothing when trying to bleed? now im beginning to wonder if the carriers may be at fault as I noticed the nut slider bit with the rubber grommet on was hanging out so wonder if this would cause any issue with the calipers function. The caliper must be ok as I blew compressed air into the inlet and it blew out the bleed nipple side. done the nipple up and done it again and the cylinder moved. am I missing something here, ive never known a caliper to be like this hard to bleed

The carrier won't have any effect on bleeding the system. What you've just done proves the caliper is ok.

From what you've said earlier there seems to be no reason why it shouldn't bleed ok.

right just incase im missing something or overlooking something simple this is what im doing? Undo the master cylinder in the engine bay, have my gf pressure the brake pedal a few times till it firms up and then hold it, whist I undo the rear far side caliper bleeder nipple till the pedal sinks to the floor, do up the bleeder nipple top up master then repeat till no air shows????

What you've said is spot on. :)

well I tried this again with the girlfriends help kept the handbrake on, but notice the return spring loose so might have to replace this, redone the passenger side and she said it got much better under foot the more we done it, but the driver side she said still felt stiff regardless, when the handbrake is applied I cant turn the disc so handbrake is working ok, but when I asked her to hold down the brake pedal I can still move the disc. she says when the pedal is pumped 4/5 times and firms up and then I undo the nipple it don't sink??? Im gonna replace the carrier slider bolts but not sure what size they are, any ideas cheers

Hi guys, im not giving up with this. Im getting the normal squirt each time i bleed the driver side but the pedal dont sink and feels firm, im guessing that that little squirt each time is the norm for a ford. Im gonna replace the slider pins as they pop right out and the handbrake return spring as that when the handbrake is off is lose and can be removed by hand and dont return the lever right back. Then getting to a garage for a brake check. Cheers guys for all the patience on this one. Failing all that ive seen a set on ebay now selling 80 a set refurb
